{"id":81334,"date":"2021-10-15T10:25:25","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T10:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/sharp-decline-demand-softwood-lumber-germany-sawmills-adjust-production\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:56:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:56:16","slug":"sharp-decline-demand-softwood-lumber-germany-sawmills-adjust-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/sharp-decline-demand-softwood-lumber-germany-sawmills-adjust-production\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharp decline in demand for softwood lumber in Germany; sawmills adjust production"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p><em>The corona lockdown, drought and forest damage in 2020 was followed by extreme demand in spring 2021, which has determined the expansion of production by companies in the German sawmill and wood industry.\u00a0The opposite trend has been evident since July: The demand for softwood lumber has fallen significantly due to the high level of inventory among retailers and processors and has made new, contrary production adjustments in the sawmill and wood industry necessary.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A current market survey among the member companies of the German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association (DeSH) confirms the trend that has persisted since July: \"After the special Corona effects in 2020 and at the beginning of the year, we are once again faced with a changed market situation with a significant decline in demand for softwood lumber.\u00a0Around 40 percent of our members expect a negative business and sales development in the coming months, almost as many will have to adjust their production accordingly.\u00a0As early as July, production activity was significantly reduced compared to the previous months,\u201d explains DeSH President J\u00f6rn Kimmich.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adjustment of the production activity to changed demand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The background to this contrary development is the large increase in stocks in the timber trade and in further processing stages, which often significantly exceeded the annual requirement.\u00a0In addition, a general weakening of the Corona special effects, such as in the DIY sector, can be observed.\u00a0\u201cThanks to major investments by the industry in expanding its production and personnel capacities, the skyrocketing demand was met in the past six months.\u00a0This is good news for the increase in the use of wood in Germany in the coming years.\u00a0However, the current market development is going in the opposite direction,\u201d adds Kimmich.\u00a0If there are no changes in the market in the next few months, the sawmill and wood industry will have to broaden its sales channels internationally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Future strategy for wood<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The current market situation in the industry was already a central topic at the German Timber Congress organized by DeSH. The experts from business, research and industry agreed that the sector must develop a future strategy for sustainable growth in wood use in Germany for the coming years. \u201cThe back and forth between the extremes of demand damages the industry in the long term. We want to make sure that we can master the challenges of the future. Right at the top of the agenda is the availability of wood for domestic timber construction, without which the climate neutrality of the building sector will not be achieved. But we also need better market forecasts and needs analyzes, as well as a fast and effective infrastructure for transport and logistics, in order to be able to process the wood quickly in extreme weather events.
