Demand for Finnish lumber this year has been supported by favorable developments in construction investment in Europe, the United States and Asia.\u00a0Admittedly, the problems in the Chinese real estate market, are likely to lead to a decline in construction volumes in China and, at worst, in the rest of the world.\u00a0In North Africa, which is suffering from a collapse in tourism revenues, there has been little increase in construction.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The opening up of tourism is likely to bring a change to this.\u00a0Thanks to the good market situation and the weak comparison year colored by industrial action, Finnish\u00a0lumber\u00a0exports are expected to increase by 11 per cent this year and by three per cent next year.\u00a0Domestic consumption will be supported both this year and next by growth in construction volume.<\/p>\n

This year, lumber production has increased in the largest producer countries in the United States, Russia and Canada.\u00a0In Sweden, production rose by a few per cent in January-June and in Finland by almost a fifth.\u00a0The strong growth in Finland at the beginning of the year is largely explained by the weak start of last year.\u00a0Growth will slow down towards the end of the year, so that Finland's production volume growth will be less than 11 per cent for the whole year and the production volume will be just over 12 million cubic meters.\u00a0Finland's annual production has not exceeded 12 million cubic meters since 2007. Next year, production will increase by three per cent, which will be boosted not only by good demand but also by the start of production at Mets\u00e4 Group's Rauma sawmill.<\/p>\n

Finnish xport prices for\u00a0lumber rose in the first half of the year with a force not seen since the oil crisis of the 1970s.\u00a0In January-July, the cumulative export price of Finnish\u00a0lumber\u00a0increased by 37 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year.\u00a0On a monthly basis, the export price in July was 78 per cent higher than in July of the previous year.<\/p>\n

The export price of\u00a0lumber\u00a0has probably peaked in the summer.\u00a0In such a market situation, it is very difficult to predict the exact development of the export price of\u00a0lumber.\u00a0However, it is clear that the direction is downwards.\u00a0The export price of\u00a0lumber\u00a0will fall towards the end of the year, so that this year the average export price will rise by 22 per cent from the previous year.\u00a0Next year, the average export price is expected to fall by ten percent.\u00a0The average price will thus be somewhat higher than in previous years.<\/p>\n

The export price of pine lumber will rise by 25 per cent this year and of spruce lumber by 19 per cent.\u00a0The export price of Finnish pine lumber will increase more than spruce.\u00a0The background is the emphasis on Finnish exports to Europe, where the price level of pine and spruce lumber is higher than in other market areas important to Finland.<\/p>\n

In the first half of this year, Europe's share halved, from just under two-fifths in 2019.\u00a0Growth in exports to Europe has reduced exports to North Africa and Asia.\u00a0The emphasis on exports to Europe is particularly evident in pine lumber.\u00a0Next year, exports to North Africa and Asia are likely to increase again, as a result of which the export price of pine lumber will fall more than spruce.<\/p>\n

The competitiveness of Finnish hardwood plywood has improved<\/strong><\/p>\n

Demand for plywood has been boosted this year by the good mood of construction and, as the year progresses, the recovery of production in the automotive and transport equipment industries from last year's collapse.\u00a0Finnish plywood production will grow by 13 per cent this year and the volume of exports by 17 per cent, driven by good demand and partly also by a weak comparison year.\u00a0The higher growth than export production is due to the depletion of inventories.\u00a0Next year, production and exports will grow by the same amount, three percent.<\/p>\n

Finnish exports of softwood plywood will rise more strongly this year than hardwood plywood, as the production of the automotive and transport equipment industry, which is important for the demand for hardwood plywood, has slowly recovered from the corona crisis.\u00a0Instead, the export prices of both softwood and hardwood plywood will increase by four per cent this year, but next year the export price of hardwood plywood will increase slightly more than softwood plywood.<\/p>\n

The competitiveness of Finnish and European birch plywood was improved by the anti-dumping duties on birch plywood imposed by the European Commission on Russian hardwood plywood, which came into force in mid-June.\u00a0However, as this summer and autumn progressed, the import price of Russian birch plywood rose sharply.\u00a0With this in mind, the Commission may put anti-dumping duties on the shelf to ensure access to raw materials for the European manufacturing industry.\u00a0Due to the increased import price from Russia, the shelving of anti-dumping duties would not change the competitive situation in birch plywood.<\/p>\n
