The Finnish timber market will pick up significantly this and next year, says the Finnish Pellervo Institute PTT).\u00a0The rise is boosted by, among other things, the recovery of forest industry exports and major new investments.\u00a0Carrying income of private forests are expected to exceed the figures for the peak year 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Finnish timber market is going through an exceptionally busy year.\u00a0Timber trade will increase significantly, and harvesting volumes will increase as industrial timber use increases.\u00a0At the same time, wood prices will rise and forest owners'\u00a0 income will increase, \u201d concludes research director Paula Horne of PTT.<\/p>\n

The strong growth figures in Finnish forestry are partly the result of a weak comparison level, as the year 2020 was slowed down by the corona pandemic, industrial action and poor harvesting conditions.\u00a0On the other hand, there is also a good demand situation in the background.\u00a0A significant effect is the restructuring of the forest industry, where the importance of paper is decreasing and the wood products industry is growing.<\/p>\n

The background is also influenced by large investments in the forest sector.\u00a0Stora Enso's new board machine in Oulu will increase the use of softwood fiber, and the start-up of Mets\u00e4 Group's Rauma sawmill and Kemi bioproduct plant will increase the need for wood next year.<\/p>\n

The use of wood is increasing and the amount of harvest is increasing<\/strong><\/p>\n

The use of wood by the entire Finnish forest industry will rise by almost seven percent this year from last year.\u00a0The locomotive is the wood products industry, where utilization rates are rising and plywood production is picking up.\u00a0As a result, domestic harvesting will increase by about nine percent.<\/p>\n

Next year, investments in the Finnish forest industry will increase the need for wood and market fellings will increase by about 3% to almost 65 million cubic meters.\u00a0This will be slightly below the record year of 2018, which was 69 million cubic meters.<\/p>\n

Prices on the rise<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prices for both logs and pulpwood have risen this year.\u00a0The average annual price of logs will increase by about 12 per cent and that of pulpwood by about six.\u00a0These developments reflect the strong demand for lumber and the consequent rise in export prices.\u00a0Next year, the rise in the price of log and pulpwood will ease as demand is expected to decline.<\/p>\n

Rising wood prices and increased logging are reflected in the forest owner\u2019s wallet.\u00a0The growth trend in gross fixed income has continued since 2014 at an average annual rate of 8%.<\/p>\n

This year, gross income from private forests will increase by more than a quarter compared to last year, which will be offset by a milder three percent increase next year.\u00a0Gross cash income will rise to more than 2.3 billion euros next year, which is even higher than the nominal income of the peak year 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
