The Finnish forest industry has benefited from high export prices due to the coronavirus pandemic.\u00a0The value of exports will rise by 15 percent this year, but still lag behind pre-corona levels.\u00a0Next year, growth will slow down as this year's wild price spikes in lumber will certainly not repeat next year.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe production of forest industry products and the growth in exports are driven by particularly high prices and a weak base year of 2020, the figures of which were weighed down by a pandemic and industrial action.\u00a0The sharp rise in prices is accelerating pulp and sawn timber in particular.\u00a0However, prices are turning from the top down, so next year the growth in the value of exports will level off, \u201dsays forest economist at\u00a0Pellervo Economic Institute (PTT)\u00a0Matti Valonen.<\/p>\n

The value of forest industry exports will increase by 15 per cent this year from last year, but will still be just over five per cent lower than in 2019. At that time, paper was still the most important export product of the Finnish forest industry, as it will be the smallest of the main products this year.\u00a0Paper exports are clearly reduced by production capacity closed last year and closing this year.<\/p>\n

The biggest increase in the price of lumber is already behind us<\/strong><\/p>\n

Export prices for lumber rose in the first half of the year with a force not seen since the oil crisis of the 1970s.\u00a0Prices in June were up tens of percent higher than last year.\u00a0Thanks to the good market situation, Finnish lumber exports will grow by 11 per cent this year and by three percent next year.<\/p>\n

Demand for lumber has been supported by brisk construction in Europe, the United States and Asia.\u00a0Admittedly, problems overshadowing the Chinese real estate market may reduce construction volumes.\u00a0In North Africa, which is suffering from a collapse in tourism revenues, construction has also hardly increased.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn such a market situation, it is very difficult to predict the exact development of the export price for lumber. However, it is clear that the direction is downwards,\u201d says Matti Valonen.<\/p>\n

Paper and board outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n

The printing and writing paper market suffered badly during the corona period, but this year the situation in Europe has picked up.\u00a0Demand has recovered slightly, and when capacity has been closed in Finland and other countries, news was even heard in the summer about paper availability problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Finnish paper industry has responded to this by raising utilization rates.\u00a0Despite this, paper exports will continue to decline when the Veitsiluoto mill closes.\u00a0The long-term trend will not change either - there will be no return to pre-corona levels and demand will continue to fall,\u201d says forest economist at PTT Marjo Maidell.<\/p>\n

Global demand for paperboard, on the other hand, remains strong, and Finnish exports are growing.\u00a0The development is accelerated by the start-up of Stora Enso's board machine in Oulu.<\/p>\n

Europe's growing demand for pulp is a good complement to China's trade<\/strong><\/p>\n

Demand for softwood pulp in Europe is currently strong.\u00a0This is due to the refreshed and still strong consumption of papers, problems with the availability of recycled fiber, low inventories and maintenance outages expected for the rest of the year.\u00a0In contrast, demand in China has weakened, at least momentarily.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough China has been the single most important export country for Finnish pulp, the good demand situation in Europe compensates for the situation and strengthens pulp exports.\u00a0This is also reflected in the market price, which rose to a new record in Europe in the summer, \u201d says Marjo Maidell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
