The wood sales system proposed by the Poland's State Forests for 2022 is a catastrophe and will deepen the problems of the Polish wood industry, say Polish timber industry representatives. They add that their calls to limit Polish wood exports remain unanswered by the government.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Tuesday in Warsaw, a press conference of representatives of the woodwork industry and wood production in Poland took place.<\/p>\n

The President of the Polish Chamber of Commerce for the Wood Industry (PIGPD), Marek Kubiak, emphasized that 2021 produced a raw material crisis on the timber market. It was triggered by the sharp rise in demand for wood caused by the pandemic in the US and China.<\/p>\n

\"The situation in 2021 was very complicated. The prices of lumber increased by 300% in a few months. Producers in Europe started sending it to the US, which resulted in a shortage in local markets. This in turn caused rising prices of wood raw material,\" he explained.<\/p>\n

Kubiak indicated that in the second half of this year, when Polish enterprises started to source timber, the prices of a cubic meter of pine and spruce rose from approx. PLN 250\/m3 (EUR 54\/m3) to over PLN 800\/m3 (EUR 173\/m3). The PIGPD representative added that although the situation on the American market began to normalize, the prices of lumber in Poland are still at a high level. Access to it is also difficult, due to high export levels.<\/p>\n

Kubiak said that despite the many appeals of the industry to the Polish government to limit the export of timber from Poland, they remained unanswered. At the same time, he noted that the Polish State Forests proposed a \"catastrophic\" system of timber sales for 2022.<\/p>\n

The president of PIGPD emphasized that despite the earlier announcements of foresters that the new sales rules would be consulted with the industry, this did not happen in the end. He informed that the team for cooperation between forests and the industry, appointed in August by the head of the State Forests, never met. In turn, the new rules for the sale of timber were approved by the Director General of the State Forests on September 22. \"These rules are very unfavorable for the Polish wood industry,\"\u00a0 he said.<\/p>\n

Poland's timber industry is in crisis<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The industry criticizes, among others, the change in the share of wood that is purchased by the industry on the Forest and Timber Portal and at auctions. According to the new rules, in 2022 the amount of wood purchased on the Portal by customers with a purchase history will drop from 80 to 70 percent. The remaining of 30 percent will be sent to auctions.<\/p>\n

Kubiak argued that by directing a larger amount of wood into shares, many companies that do not have a purchase history may be priced higher by entrepreneurs dealing with the purchase of wood and its subsequent export abroad.<\/p>\n

According to the information provided by the director of PIGPD, Rafa\u0142 Szefler, in recent years about 15 million cubic meters have been exported from Poland. Up to 4 million cubic meters may leave the country this year.\u00a0Szefler\u00a0added that, apart from the exporters, virtually no one benefits from wood exports, because the exported raw material is subject to a zero VAT rate.<\/p>\n

The industry is also not satisfied with the new criteria for evaluating offers proposed by the LP.<\/p>\n

The President of PIGPD emphasized that, especially nowadays, wood has become a strategic raw material and many countries are doing a lot to regulate and limit the export of such raw material abroad. Kubiak mentioned that this is what Russia , Belarus, Hungary, Croatia are doing , next year it may also include Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In turn, there is no reaction from the Polish authorities - he stressed.<\/p>\n

The president of the POiD (Polish Windows and Doors) association, Janusz Komurkiewicz, pointed out that despite the good situation on the construction market and the record number of delivered apartments, the industry may face shortages of construction timber. When asked how high wood prices affect the woodwork prices, he explained that they are noticeable, but cannot be compared to, for example, a several hundred percent increase in the prices of wood itself.<\/p>\n

Komurkiewicz also assessed that the current high wood prices should start falling after the new year. However, he pointed out that if this does not happen, such a situation will have a significant impact on production costs. This, in turn, will reduce the competitiveness of producers, which may translate into a loss of the leading position in the EU - he concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
