The fall in lumber prices in the US is expected to affect Europe in the fourth quarter, with a decline of 25\u201340%.\u00a0But the market is not collapsing, and the returns are getting higher and higher.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Wood prices have skyrocketed over the past year and more than doubled in some cases, but the boom from coronavirus is now reversing.\u00a0This is stated by Danske Bank, which expects European wood prices to fall after followind the same trend like in the United States.<\/p>\n

In the United States, prices per board fee have fallen from about $ 1,700 in May to today's levels of about 450-550.\u00a0Danske Bank believes that the turnaround has now also reached the rest of the world.\u00a0However, European sawmills are expected to report strong profits in the third quarter as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the dramatic price development, the market is basically good with record low inventory levels, declining lumber production in Canada and continued capital injections.\u00a0If we get a sharp fall in prices of, for example, 40 percent, it would still be at a historically high price level, \u201d says Johan Freij, head of the Forest & Agriculture business area at Danske Bank Sweden in a comment.<\/p>\n

Danske Bank also addresses the regulation of forests from the EU as a threat.\u00a0The idea is that coal storage in forests and land will compensate for emissions from other sectors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this becomes a reality, we may be forced to reduce wood production by up to 20 percent, which would be devastating for forestry and the willingness to invest.\u00a0Forestry is extremely long-term and now that the forest industry is in a position with planned multi-billion investments in, for example, climate-smart biorefineries, stable rules of the game and secure access to raw materials are crucial,\u201d says Johan Freij.<\/p>\n

In other respects, it is predicted that timber prices have reached their peak, that there will be no price increase for pulpwood and that the bark beetle has calmed down in south-eastern Sweden.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
