The explosive growth in prices for building materials and timber, which was observed in spring all over the world, has now been replaced by an equally rapid fall.\u00a0If back in May, lumber futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange cost almost $ 1.7 thousand per board foot, now they have fallen in price almost three times.\u00a0But in Russia so far there is no dramatic reduction in prices.<\/em><\/p>\n

A rapid rise in prices was also observed in the spring in Russia.\u00a0In just six months, the cost of lumber on the domestic market has doubled: from 11 thousand rubles per cubic meter (128.98<\/span>\u00a0Euro\/m3)\u00a0<\/span>to 20-26 thousand rubles (234-301<\/span>\u00a0Euro\/m3)<\/span>\u00a0in July.\u00a0However, then the growth stopped.<\/p>\n

The Russian Forest Association named several reasons for the sharp rise in prices in the spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndeed, 2021 saw an extraordinary rise in prices for many goods and services.\u00a0And a similar situation was noted not only in Russia - this is a global trend,<\/span>- says Pavel Karnaukh, first vice-president of the Russian Forest National Association.\u00a0Such growth is associated with the post-pandemic economic recovery, changes in the structure of demand and consumption on the part of end users, as well as a break in supply chains and an imbalance in supply and demand.\u00a0The surge in consumption caused a shortage of many building materials, including wood products, which in turn led to higher prices in the market.\"<\/p>\n

There are reasons for the decline<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since August, prices on the Russian market have been correcting, but there is no dramatic decline, as on the stock exchanges.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a slight decrease, but it is within 10%,\u201d one of the sources in the forestry industry commented.\u00a0- Firstly, the construction season is almost over, it was on the eve of it that lumber prices have skyrocketed in the spring.\u00a0And, secondly, Russia is preparing to introduce a ban on the export of roundwood from January 2022. \"<\/span><\/p>\n

The association \"Russian Forest\" also confirms the beginning of the price correction.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the markets for forest products are influenced by the raw materials super cycle that began at the beginning of this year, it is obvious that the rise in prices could not continue indefinitely,\u201d explains Pavel Karnaukh.\u00a0''With the restoration of supply chains and the balance of supply and demand, we see that the prices of commodities and building materials have begun to balance and even decline for most types of products.''<\/p>\n

The cost of sawnwood in the United States has declined by 50% since June 2021, which has led to a reorientation of exports from Canada and a number of Scandinavian countries to China. Due to the disproportionate consumption of the increase in stocks of products in the ports of importing countries, prices in August-September in the markets of China, Korea, EU, India and Egypt decreased in some cases by $ 100 per m3.
