Furniture manufacturing companies in the United Kingdom, the European Union and other countries and regions are also facing the threat of interruption of the domestic supply chain due to the shortage of wood materials and other factors.

Against the background of strong demand conditions, supply is slow to catch up due to several reasons, including production cutbacks, input shortages and surging shipping rates. Such large supply-demand imbalances are not only holding back the recovery across the advanced economies but also fuelling near-term inflationary pressures.

With the rapid spread of a new round of Delta virus around the world, the pace of recovery of the global industrial chain has been severely affected, threatening the economic rebound after the pandemic and pushing up inflation. At present, global timber prices have fallen since their record high in May, more pronounced in North America, but they are still higher than their pre-pandemic levels. A large number of factories in Binh Duong Province, the industrial center of Vietnam, have been shut down, and the domestic supply chain is facing disruption, which may threaten the global supply chain.

Due to the impact of logistics in the UK, the furniture industry has recently been threatened by supply chain shortages. And this state continues.

According to a quarterly survey conducted by the European Commission, one third of EU furniture manufacturers indicated that their supply chain has been severely affected. The main reasons for this include: the closure of some ports in major Asian supply countries/regions has led to the delay/cancellation of part of the supply chain transportation; frequent natural disasters; and rising transportation costs.

Large furniture manufacturers such as IKEA and Temahome (French furniture manufacturer) said they were affected by the disruption of the supply chain and believed that this impact would exist for a long time.

Despite signs that supply chain disruptions have peaked in several sectors, it is that supply constraints will likely last longer than initially envisaged. This is, in particular, due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant in Asia, where lockdown measures have been reintroduced or tightened in recent months. Against the background of the low vaccination coverage, and with some Asian countries pursuing zero-Covid policies, new outbreaks have led to temporary factory and port closures. That said, each setback in the reopening raises the risk of negative spillovers to other regions of the world economy, potentially leading to longer – if not more intensified – supply chain disruptions.

Overall, both the spread of the Delta variant and supply chain disruptions remain key downside risks to global timber market outlook, highlighting how critical the path of the pandemic is to the functioning of supply chains. At the same time, supply-side frictions may dent, but not fundamentally derail the recovery, assuming that supply-demand imbalances will gradually narrow in the coming quarters.

Vietnam’s exports of timber and its wood products are facing a crisis since the Delta variant outbreak hit in July.
