After reaching a peak above $1600 per board foot in May 2021, lumber futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange dropped below $500 per board foot.

The main reason for the decrease in prices is the slumping demand for timber-based materials in the construction sector. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in June, new home sales dropped by 6.6% in the U.S. compared with May and consisted of 676k units. The average selling price for new homes increased from $418.6k in January to $437k in April where it peaked. In May the average selling price for new homes began to fall and in June was $428.7k. An increase in the interest rate in the U.S. and a decrease in mortgage credit availability along with growing costs of new housing have hampered the demand for real estate. Besides this, as tourism recovers, people are beginning to spend more on vacations rather than renovations and purchasing real estate.

While prices are starting to trend downward in the U.S., other European countries are still acutely feeling the effects of the sharp increase in global prices for wood.

For example in Russia, lumber prices on the domestic market skyrocketed in the second quarter of this year and reached their highest value in June. This increase was caused by a shortage of lumber within the country due to rapid growth in exports, particularly to China.

To hold back prices on the domestic market, the Russian government implemented 10% export duties on sawn softwood and raw hardwood from July through December 2021.

No end in sight for rising timber prices in the Netherlands

Timber prices in the Netherlands have more than doubled in recent months. It's also not clear when those prices will stabilize.

"Timber prices used to remain stable throughout the year. We could conclude contracts for longer periods. Nowadays, if I send out a quotation, you must accept it within a week or else the sales price has to be adjusted," says Robert Helder from Hoekman Houtindustrie.

“There's an issue with availability. That's for both sawn timber and board material. That includes chipboard, OSB, MDF, and hardboard. These are all frequently used in export and transport packaging." That's part of a message this Dutch company sent its customers.

However, prices have recently been dropping sharply on the global timber market. Is the end of the unprecedented rise in timber prices in sight? "No," say the Dutch Packaging and Pallet Industry Association (EPV) and VVNH (Royal Association of Dutch Timber Companies). Several other Dutch wood processing companies agree.

The price of logs in Estonia expected to rise further this autumn

High demand for wood has led to a sharp increase in prices in Estonia, and compared to last year, for example, the price of spruce logs has risen by as much as 80 percent.

Estonian forestry expert Heiki Hepner says that the current situation in the timber market is unprecedented. Although the price of hardwood logs is also high, the prices of softwood logs stand out.

According to the analysis of the Estonian Private Forest Center, the price of pine logs had risen to 88 euros/m3 by June, a year earlier it was 78 euros per cubic meter. The price of spruce logs has also risen from 68 euros to 80 euros.

Hepner predicted that the price of softwood logs could reach 100 euros/m3 in the autumn.

UK: Price of imported lumber jumps by 23% in a month

The price of some imported lumber in UK has jumped 23 percent in just one month.

The price of imported sawn or planed lumber jumped by more than a fifth between June and July, according to the latest data provided by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The material is now more than 64 percent more expensive than it was in July 2020.

Imported plywood was nearly 12 percent more expensive in July than it was in June and up 82 percent over the past year.

Lumber has consistently been one of the materials facing the most severe shortages and price hikes. In August UK architects spoke out about how the ‘perfect storm’ of the Covid crisis, Brexit hurdles and surging construction activity had combined to create a ‘huge’ lumber shortage, which was in turn impacting on projects.

Germany: Wood prices expected to rise further by 30 percent by the end of the year

In Germany the sharpest price increase in raw materials is recorded in wood, which was in the summer twice as expensive as in September 2020.

In a recent survey, the German wood manufacturers expect an increase in prices of up to 33 percent by the end of the year. This is driven by a sustained high level of construction and renovation as well as the increasing demand for furniture.

The wood suppliers can hardly keep up and fear further supply chain problems if the countries react with restrictions to exponentially increasing delta virus variants.

Lumber prices in the U.S. are plummeting and nearing pre-COVID figures while pulling global prices down with them.
