The other companies can only maintain less than 50% of their production capacity.

On September 7, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh chaired a conference on timber and forest product processing with the participation of the General Department of Forestry, associations, and businesses in the Vietnamese wood industry to find solutions soon for obstacles in production activities due to to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to MARD Deputy Minister Le Quoc Doanh, by the end of August 2021, the export turnover of Vietnamese wood and forest products is estimated at US$11.2 billion, up nearly 43% over the same period in 2020.

However, since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in the southern provinces in July 2021 until now, there has been a decline in exports with August the heaviest. Specifically, from July 2 to August 8, 2021, the export turnover of wood and forest products decreased sharply compared to the same period in 2020.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Do Xuan Lap, Chairman of the Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association (VIFORES), said that many difficulties are surrounding businesses in the industry, especially in the southern localities.

“Currently, over 50% of enterprises producing wood and forest products in the South have had to suspend production, facing the risk of bankruptcy. Meanwhile, those that are still operating on the principle of "3-on-one-site" can only maintain less than 50% of their capacity, not to mention a sharp increase of costs to ensure safety against the pandemic," Mr. Lap said.

According to him, if the situation does not have positive changes, very few enterprises can maintain operations. One of the pressing concerns raised by the VIFORES representative is that workers in the industry are vaccinated too little, currently only about 15-20%.

Therefore, the Chairman of VIFORES proposed the MARD to raise the priority of vaccination for workers in the industry. In addition, he suggested local authorities create favorable conditions for enterprises to be proactive in epidemic prevention such as self-testing and self-isolation. Moreover, the local health department can also provide training to businesses on medical skills.

Regarding financial issues, Mr. Lap said that it was necessary to have more policies to extend principal debt and interest from 6 to 12 months so that enterprises have more time to restore production. "The MARD should recommend the Ministry of Transport to reduce some types of transport fees and support enterprises in current time, especially shipping charges," Chairman Do Xuan Lap suggested.

Over 50% of timber processing enterprises Vietnam’s South have to stop operation, facing the risk of bankruptcy.
