In the long-term, experts expect that the price of wood is likely to rise further, as well as demand for it.

The Czech construction and furniture industries have to deal with a lack of material, which causes both delays in orders and a significant increase in the price of all types of furniture and furniture services.

"The price of logs, apart from the prices of poorer quality wood, went up by about fifty percent. Even more for some assortments. The prices of softwood logs, especially spruce and pine, have started to rise significantly since the middle of last year. This year, there has been a significant increase in all quarters so far, and prices have risen so fast that they have changed from month to month, "Aleš Erber, a Czech forest analyst, told to the Czech media.

The increase was also reflected in bark beetle wood, where the price has almost doubled since last year.

The lack of wood and the strong increase in its price has been reflected in the Czech furniture industry. According to the Association of Czech Furniture Makers, interest in furniture and related services, such as assembly, is still very high, and waiting times correspond to this. However, the biggest problem at the moment is the lack of materials. "This is something that bothers most manufacturers in the Czech Republic and thus their customers. So it's not even the price increase, but rather delivery times that are extended without the manufacturers themselves being to blame, "said Tomáš Lukeš, secretary of the Association of Czech Furniture Makers.

Czech wood processing companies now have to reserve materials well in advance. For example, they already have to count on planning what will happen in December or after the new year. According to the furniture association, however, the situation is not so catastrophic. "Companies have always ordered wood in advance. It's not something they haven't dealt with in the past. Companies are committed to fulfill orders, even if sometimes the deliveries are delayed, "says Lukeš.

According to him, however, wood prices are not in record growth. "Wood is simply becoming more expensive, as are other items that we need to live. Given that inflation is also advancing, there is no need to worry that prices will reach levels, where furniture will no longer be available to customers, "Lukeš believes.

The rise in the price of furniture services is also due to rising oil prices and a shortage of oil products. These are used, for example, in upholstery. However, other materials for furniture production are also missing from the market. "From various metal components to oil-based ones, where the shortage is truly noticeable. Not enough polyurethane foam used in upholstery. However, there are not enough different plastic components that are produced in granulate mills. Granules are often imported from really distant sources, from Asia or South America, "Lukeš explained.

There is still no exact answer to how much the price of wood has gone up in the Czech Republic compared to last year, but probably the rise is in double-digits. ''In the past years, the price of wood has fallen due to the bark beetle calamity. However, for furniture manufacturers it was such a slight decrease that it is not even worth mentioning it,'' says Lukeš. In principle, bark beetle wood cannot be used for the production of furniture and is also avoided by manufacturers of chipboard and other surface materials. The furniture makers therefore had to buy wood for their production of better quality and more expensive. Now the bark beetle calamity has slowed down due to this year's colder weather.

As for the future long-term outlook, experts expect that the price of wood is likely to rise further, as well as demand for it.

Unusual increases in wood prices in the Czech Republic continue to impact producers in the furniture and construction industry.
