In the Swedish lumber market there is still high activity mostly due to its main trading partner the UK.

Interviewed by Swedish wood industry media outlet Skogsaktuellt, Christian Nielsen who is a market analyst for wood products at the Swedish trade association Skogsindustrierna, a normalization is now visible with a return to price levels similar to the "corona boom".

Balanced prices

This is especially true for the United States.

''Prices have finally balanced out and there are also signs that inventories have actually been replenished through the value chain. It even seems that the construction industry has relatively high stocks now compared to before the pandemic,'' says Christian and continues:

''I think the situation could change over the next month as there have been a lot of disruptions due to large fires in Canada where some sawmills have announced cuts in production. There could be a small surge in the next month or the next two. We can only hope that it balances relatively well then. If you look from a sawmill perspective in the slightly longer term, it is good that the situation in the US has also begun to normalize a bit. These extreme price changes are not something that is great for the market in the slightly longer term.''

Christian believes that it has been easy to follow the price development in the USA and refer to it as the prices are updated very quickly.

''But if we look instead at Sweden, we have almost doubled exports to the US compared to last year, but of the total Swedish exports of wood products in 2020, only five percent went there. We are more affected by what is happening in the UK, and there they have not really seen the same dampening when it comes to the price of wood products, he says.

Strong demand

According to Christian, the United Kingdom had problems with supply in the spring of 2020 when it reduced its imports due to corona-related restrictions in society, which created a large deficit.

''Then they fought until the autumn to catch up with this deficit, at the same time as they had a strong demand. It has been the same home-building trend in the UK as in Sweden, so the situation there has probably been almost more strained than in North America,'' says Christian.

The United Kingdom has had difficulty obtaining wood products, at the same time as it is the market that is driving Swedish exports.

''Before the summer, there was some concern because Swedish sawmills had the lowest stock levels in 20 years, while the British do not have the same industrial holiday where you close down during the summer, but they continue to shop. Then the sawmills usually take from their warehouses to supply the British market, which has now been much more difficult,'' says Christian.

According to preliminary figures he has received, it looks like the Swedish stocks of wood products continue to decrease and that production is slightly higher than normal, even for the summer months.

''I have not received any final figures yet, but this is probably something we can also expect in the next one to two months. For the Swedish part, there will continue to be quite a lot of pressure on the export side and on the UK market,'' says Christian.

He believes that there are major problems with logistics when it comes mainly to truck transports and construction labor, both due to the pandemic and as a result of Brexit where a lot of foreign labor has left the country.

''It will be an exciting autumn where a lot can happen. Above all, the market is weighing a little now. It is a situation that you have been waiting for a bit, so to speak. When will the market start to balance? In the European market, we have not really reached this balance position as it has in the US,'' says Christian and continues:

''There are factors that both indicate that it can continue to be an extremely strong market, but also other factors that could mean that we see a slowdown, such as logistics and personnel problems in the UK. At the same time, construction activity there is unusually high, so we can probably expect continued strong demand for Sweden''.

After the spring and summer price party for wood products in the US market, the price situation has now returned to normal levels.
