The Covid crisis, Brexit hurdles and surging construction activity have combined to create a \u2018huge\u2019 timber shortage across the country.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to a poll by UK's Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) published in August, respondents expect construction material costs, including wood, to rise by about 10 per cent over the next year.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile builders' merchant Travis Perkins revealed that it had seen inflation in its input costs jump from 2 per cent in the first quarter of 2021 to 5 per cent in the second and that plasterboard and timber were in particularly short supply.<\/div>\n

Now UK architects have spoken out about the increasing impact of the unprecedented timber shortages on their schemes.<\/p>\n

Steven Wallis, a senior associate at dRMM, said that timber supply issues had already been felt on \u2018a few\u2019 of its jobs, in particular its\u00a0WorkStack industrial intensification project,\u00a0where increasing costs and squeezed production availability for engineered timber had proved \u2018very challenging\u2019.<\/p>\n

He said:\u00a0\u2018A perfect storm of Covid restrictions limiting production, Brexit red tape complicating imports, compounded by a global increase in demand for timber construction products, has created huge timber shortages.<\/em><\/div>\n

\u2018If timber is to be a viable alternative to carbon-intensive structures such as concrete, then we need to put some visionary thinking into building sustainable and regenerative domestic forestry and supply chain systems.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018We need to ensure adequate, consistent, high-quality timber supply that supports biodiversity, is resilient to disease and climate change and can be offered at a viable price point.\u2019<\/em><\/div>\n

Katrina Austen, an architectural assistant at Architype, who is currently writing her dissertation on timber at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), agreed. She said:\u00a0\u2018We have been facing extended lead times and price increases for timber, and it seems like our story is a similar one across the industry. However, the issue is not isolated to the UK.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018[Suppliers] we\u2019ve been speaking to, who source their timber from overseas, have been struggling and have had to reflect this in prices and lead times. This has highlighted something we have been endorsing for some time: the importance of specifying and using home-grown timber. By sourcing timber locally, we can support local industry and reduce the embodied carbon of our buildings.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking to the BBC,\u00a0architect Wilf Meynell of Studio Bark, said:\u00a0\u2018Everyone\u2019s taking a hit. Our entire business is focused around timber. The price of birch plywood has doubled and the cost of our standard work has risen by 25 per cent.\u2019<\/em><\/div>\n

The RIBA's executive director of professional services, Adrian Dobson, said the institute was aware of the problems relating to the surging demand and was \u2018following the situation closely\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He said:\u00a0\u2018As our most recent Future Trends survey highlighted, building material shortages \u2013 including timber \u2013 have led to significant challenges in the architects\u2019 market, causing site delays for 63 per cent of practices, with a quarter reporting that site work has been put on hold. These shortages are also driving inflationary pressures for construction products and materials.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s a concern for businesses and the potential embodied carbon of our buildings.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

The UK is experiencing unprecedented demand for timber\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amid the lockdown, many people have turned to home improvement with the money they have saved as a result of pandemic restrictions. This pattern of rising demand for home improvement timber and wood products has been mirrored internationally with global demand exacerbating pressure on available supplies.<\/p>\n

This has helped cause a surge in demand, which is affecting all construction materials, with bricks, cement, steel and other crucial supplies facing similar problems.<\/p>\n

As a net importer of sustainable, high-quality timber for construction, where many trees are planted for every one harvested, the UK relies on European trade partners \u2013 particularly Sweden \u2013 to help meet this incredible level of demand.<\/p>\n

Already businesses are working overtime in both countries, with more than 2.6 million cubic metres of softwood imported into the UK between January and April. To give perspective, this is a 50 per cent increase on the equivalent period in 2020, and a 17 per cent increase on the same period in 2019, which predates the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Timber is increasingly important to UK construction because as a sustainably sourced material it results in far lower carbon emissions than concrete or steel. It also locks away CO2 in the wood fibre for the lifetime of products used in a building.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
