Exports of European softwood lumber to Japan reached in volume 1,110,802 cubic meters in the first half of the year, 37% less than the same period of last year. This is the fourth year of consecutive decline.<\/em><\/p>\n

However, due to booming export prices, exports in value declined by only 4%. The average European export price was up by 54%.<\/span><\/p>\n

By items, sawn and planed pine exports are 407,495\u00a0m3, 56% less than in the first half of 2020, while sawn and planed spruce exports\u00a0 reached\u00a0675,269 m3, 17% less. By country source, Sweden was the main exporting country with\u00a0398,333\u00a0m3, 16% less,\u00a0359,165 \u00a0came from Finland, 17% less,\u00a0126,822 m3 from Austria, 13% less,\u00a083,178 cbms from Rumania, 22% less.<\/p>\n

The reason of falling softwood lumber supplies to Japan is that many sawmills in Europe concentrated on exporting to the North American market. Moreover in central Europe, supply of logs is very tight and many sawmills struggle to secure enough logs.<\/p>\n

The average export price of European softwood lumber was EUR 100\/m3 in the first half of 2021 as compared to the same period of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
