{"id":81145,"date":"2021-09-03T06:46:35","date_gmt":"2021-09-03T06:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/norway-sharp-rise-softwood-log-prices\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:56:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:56:01","slug":"norway-sharp-rise-softwood-log-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/norway-sharp-rise-softwood-log-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway: Sharp rise in softwood log prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The gradual increase in softwood prices in Norway since the second quarter of 2020 has continued into the second quarter of 2021, apart from a temporary slump in April.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hardwood logs rose sharply in the middle of the second quarter, only to drop to the lowest value since February 2020 at the end of the quarter.\u00a0At the same time, Norwegian pulpwood prices initially collapsed quite significantly, only to gradually recover again.<\/p>\n<p>The sharp drop in the price of softwood logs was exacerbated by the significant appreciation of the Norwegian krone (NOK) against the euro (\u20ac).\u00a0This development was preceded by an almost three-year increase in the price of softwood logs, which came to a standstill in early 2019.\u00a0Both the prices for spruce logs and the prices for pine logs fell to an all-time low in the first quarter of 2020, but this was largely due to the sharp change in the exchange rate from NOK to \u20ac.\u00a0The current price increase is also reinforced by the now falling rate of the NOK against the \u20ac.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2021, pine was quoted at \u20ac 50.60 per cubic meter and spruce at \u20ac 51.70 per cubic meter. Compared to the previous month, pine rose by 2.8% and spruce rose by 6.5%. Within a year, the price of pine has risen sharply by 22.6%. The prices for spruce also rose by 23.8%.<span id=\"more-26653\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since mid-2019, hardwood prices have fluctuated sharply between just under \u20ac 40 \/ m3 and just under \u20ac 55 \/ m3, after they were between \u20ac 30 \/ m3 and around \u20ac 35 \/ m3 between 2016 and mid-201.\u00a0In June 2021, the price of hardwood logs was \u20ac 41.10 per cubic meter.\u00a0A comparison with the previous year is not possible due to unavailable data.\u00a0Compared to May 2021, there is a price decrease of 32%.<\/p>\n<p>Price changes are often more or less strongly influenced by exchange rates; in the first quarter of 2020, the significant decline in prices in local currency was reinforced by the sharp change in the exchange rate.\u00a0While the reference rate for one euro was 10.04 NOK in December 2019, the rate for one euro has now risen to 11.29 NOK.\u00a0On the other hand, the slight price increase observed in the fourth quarter is apparently not due to exchange rate developments.\u00a0The NOK had risen slightly but steadily against the euro since September 2020.\u00a0Over the course of the first half of 2021, the NOK fell again against the euro, apart from a brief but violent countermovement in April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The bottom line is that pulpwood prices in Norway continued to fall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the second quarter of 2021, Norwegian pulpwood prices initially collapsed quite significantly, only to gradually recover again, but without reaching the level of the first quarter again.\u00a0In terms of local currency, however, this development is somewhat more moderate for spruce, while for pine there was no price change at all and for hardwood there was actually an initial price increase.<\/p>\n<p>After a downward trend that had persisted for several years, the decline in prices for softwood was initially halted at the beginning of 2016.\u00a0From this point on, a sideways movement can be seen, which lasted until the end of 2017.\u00a0From January 2018, prices rose continuously until the beginning of 2019, and then fell steadily again into the first quarter of 2020.\u00a0This trend continued into the first quarter of 2021 after a brief recovery phase in the second quarter of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2021, the prices for pine pulpwood were \u20ac 22.70 \/ m3, those for spruce were \u20ac 23.10 \/ m3 and those for hardwood were \u20ac 25 \/ m3.\u00a0Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, this results in an increase of 0.7% for pine and 1.9% for spruce.\u00a0In contrast, hardwood rose by 4.6%.\u00a0Within a year, the prices for pine fell by 26.2% and for spruce by 14.4%.\u00a0The decrease in hardwood was 1.5%.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The gradual increase in softwood prices in Norway since the second quarter of 2020 has continued into the second quarter of 2021, apart from a temporary slump in April.\u00a0 Hardwood logs rose sharply in the middle of the second quarter, &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/norway-sharp-rise-softwood-log-prices\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":95905,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4716,4715,4714],"tags":[3722,3285,3698,3675],"class_list":["post-81145","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends","category-market-analysis","category-wood-industry-prices","tag-log-prices","tag-norway","tag-pine","tag-spruce","topic-forestry","topic-industry-prices","topic-pulp-paper","topic-sawmilling","area-europe"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
