There was hardly any rain and the wood prices were in the basement. He can still feel the financial consequences today. "The psychological situation was bad," says the 34-year-old from the Bever forestry company. In the Bergisches Land, he is the fifth generation to manage his forest. He once had a total of 40 hectares of spruce forest. That was once. The few remaining spruce trees will lose the fight against the bark beetle this year, he is sure.

In the past few years, drought and bark beetle infestation have caused a damaged area of 277,000 hectares - an area slightly larger than the Saarland - and a damaged wood share of 171 million cubic meters, according to the Working Group of German Forest Owners' Associations (AGDW). Larissa Schulz-Trieglaff from the AGDW calls it a "catastrophe of the century in the woods". Forestry has been under enormous constant pressure for years. The damaged wood, which is less attractive for the market due to storm damage or other pollution, had to be removed, and the price of wood was low in many places.

Already up to 800 euros per cubic meter for sawn timber

The situation has changed since the corona pandemic. Travel was not possible, and so in this country, but also in China and the USA, construction, renovation and expansion was and is being done - and more and more often with the climate-friendly material wood. According to the Federal Association of the German Sawmill and Wood Industry, the proportion of wooden structures has been increasing by one percent annually for years.

The sawn timber price in Germany has therefore also been rising for months. According to the German Forestry Council, it is currently up to 800 euros per cubic meter. The solid cubic meter of roundwood has remained around 80 euros so far. The result: German forest owners hardly benefit from the increased wood prices on the consumer market.

Lumber is more expensive than ever before - the sawmill and the timber trade bring huge profits, says the President of the German Forestry Council (DFWR), Georg Schirmbeck. But the sawmills still did not pay economically reasonable prices to the forest owners. The AGDW also complains that the increased wood price hardly reaches the forest owners, if at all.

Criticism of the monopoly of the sawmill industry

Schirmbeck is convinced that there is no shortage of wood in the industry. You can deliver any amount of wood in any quality if you get economically reasonable wood prices. He sees the real problem elsewhere: Few international investors based in Germany have divided up the German sawmill market among themselves - with the knowledge of the Federal Ministry of Economics, which must now act.

In fact, the forestry situation in Germany has been bad for years. According to a study by the Forestry Council, the extreme weather events from 2018 to 2020 resulted in damage of more than 12.7 billion euros - ten times the industry-wide annual net profit. The federal and state emergency aid programs, however, only covered ten to fifteen percent of the damage. Forester Hardt is currently forced to plunder his resources for the next ten to twenty years, as he himself says. He too hardly feels the wood boom. He only expects that this will improve income somewhat this year.

Corona has caused the demand for wood in Germany to rise sharply – and with it the prices. But German forest owners hardly benefit from it. 2019 and 2020 were the hardest years for forester Christian Hardt.
