At the end of July, Spruce \/ fir roundwood\u00a0(quality B, 2b)\u00a0in Austria was sold between 100 and 115 \u20ac \/ cubic meter.\u00a0That is the all-time highest price level ever reported in Austria, but also in Germany's\u00a0Bavaria and Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg.<\/em><\/p>\n

The price low is only 13 months away from the current high: In July 2020, the same range of fresh wood was sold for only \u20ac 61.3 per cubic meter.\u00a0But since most of the wood came onto the market as damaged wood, the true price level was still significantly lower.<\/p>\n

In 2013 and 2014 there was the last phase of high prices.\u00a0At that time, the provisional maximum price of \u20ac 102 \/ m3 was reached in January 2014.<\/p>\n

Highest roundwood prices in the world<\/strong><\/p>\n

Strong producer countries such as Finland (around 90 \u20ac \/ cubic meter on a long-term average from 2010 to 2020), southern Sweden (73 \u20ac \/ cubic meter) or Russia (50 \u20ac \/ cubic meter) usually have significantly lower sawlog prices.<\/p>\n

Until the full outbreak of the bark beetle calamity in 2017 or 2018, what has been postulated time and again by the sawing industry for several decades: \"In southern Germany and Austria we have the highest roundwood prices in the world.\"<\/p>\n

But from 2018 the price of logs - with a small exception in 2019\/2020 - fell virtually unabated from \u20ac 90 \/ m3 to the low of \u20ac 61.3 \/ m3.<\/p>\n

Trend: what's next?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Further increases of up to around \u20ac 125 m3 in the coming weeks are likely.<\/p>\n

Does this mean that Central Europe has the highest roundwood prices in the world again? Not quite. In British Columbia, roundwood are linked to lumber prices. This means that the roundwood price for purchases from public forests in the 3rd quarter of 2021 is three times as high as in the same period of the previous year. A further increase is expected in the fourth quarter. The drop in the price of lumber in the USA will only be taken into account later.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
