The shortage of lumber has led to an increase in prices for timber in Russia. It may take years for the market to recover, some experts say.<\/em><\/p>\n

Over the past six months, timber in Russia has added an average of 30% in price, said Ivan Melekhov, co-owner of FiNEX Handcrafted Floors brand. At the same time, some tree species have risen in price by 80%. Lumber was no exception: last spring a cubic meter cost an average of 11.000 rubles\/cubic meter (around EUR 127\/m3), now - about 26 thousand rubles (EUR 300\/m3). Since November 2020, the cost of timber and edged boards on the Russian market has almost doubled.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Russian market is highly dependent on global trends. Olga Polyanskaya, Head of the Department of Economics, Accounting and Analysis of Economic Activity, St. Petersburg State Forestry University, notes that in 2021 the cost of lumber broke records, which is associated with the rise inprices in America, which led to a deficit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe US lumber cost index has quadrupled over the past six months. The cost of roundwood has doubled, and in some regions even tripled!\u201d says Alexander Shestakov, General Director of the First Furniture Factory chain, since we have a dependence on imported components in production. But it is worth noting that domestic raw materials have risen in price. \"<\/p>\n

Prices in the world timber markets have been climbing since the spring of last year. The cost of sawnwood in the US markets from May 2020 to May 2021 increased by 4 times. \u201cThis is due to the long-term procurement issues Canada and the United States, and the growth of construction in these markets, as well as in Europe and China,\u201d says Timur Ignatov, executive director of the Association of Furniture and Woodworking Industries of Russia . He continues: in May, at the peak of price growth in the US, the price per cubic meter of particleboard exceeded $ 1200 , in Western Europe - $ 700, and in Russia it was at the level of $ 400 \".<\/p>\n

Ivan Melekhov emphasizes that the growth in demand for suburban construction in Russia has become an important factor. In May 2021, there was a shortage of timber in Russia, which further spurred prices in the summer season. For example, the cost of building boards from April 2020 to April 2021 has doubled.<\/p>\n

Another reason for the deficit, according to Melekhov, is associated with the problems of timber processors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn winter, loggers began to massively violate contracts for the supply of raw materials to sawmills - they supplied low-quality roundwood (from which it is impossible to make boards, plywood) or simply missed the deadline. and got super profits \", - says the expert and adds that frost also contributed to the deficit, due to which the drying chambers did not work for 2 months.<\/p>\n

In May, the Russian Association of Wooden Housing Construction asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to curb price increases and temporarily restrict lumber exports. The Russian government ordered the introduction of new duties (10%) on the export of timber with a moisture level exceeding 22% from July 1 to the end of the year. This applies to softwoods, as well as oak, beech and ash.<\/p>\n

Now the stagnating pace of logging remains a factor supporting high prices and demand for timber. According to Rosstat , for the first half of 2021, their volumes remain at last year's level, with almost zero growth. At the same time, the demand for raw materials from processors is now 30\u201340% higher than a year earlier. Nevertheless, Russian woodworking companies say that the price situation is starting to bounce back.<\/p>\n

\"In our markets, primarily in the markets of birch plywood and chipboard, we can rather talk about the onset of a balance of supply and demand and a possible stabilization of prices,\" says Boris Didenko, purchasing and logistics director at Sveza.<\/p>\n

Olga Polyanskaya notes that although prices for timber on Russia's domestic market have stabilized and stopped growing, it is not worth expecting their decline by the end of the country construction season. Ivan Melekhov believes that the stabilization of prices may drag on for several years: it is impossible to quickly restart supply chains and bring production to a high level of output, especially given that restrictions still remain.<\/p>\n

Shestakov points out that the problems with timber transportation have not been resolved in Russia: there are weight restrictions for vehicles, and there are difficulties with rail transportation.<\/p>\n

The expert believes that so far there is no reason to talk about an imminent reduction in forest prices, as the market is threatened with new problems. \"With a high degree of probability, plywood production will be sanctioned by the European Union to impose additional duties,\" he warns.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
