Wood prices have risen worldwide in the past year.\u00a0But is there enough wood in stock?\u00a0Yes, say researchers from Wageningen University Gert-Jan Nabuurs, Mart-Jan Schelhaas and Bas Lerink: \u201cEuropean forests have even more wood than we have seen in the past 500 years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Wood is a popular building material.\u00a0\u201cThe traditional skeleton construction is made of wood, but building with wood is also receiving more and more attention because of the climate benefits,\u201d says Gert-Jan Nabuurs.\u00a0\u201cWood replaces fossil building materials such as concrete and steel.\u00a0This prevents CO2 emissions.\u00a0A tree even stores CO2 for a longer period of time, so that it remains stored in the wood.\u00a0Wood therefore ensures a positive CO2 balance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The difference between supply and demand<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Nabuurs, the current attention to the climate-friendliness of wood does not directly increase demand, but it does influence the future wood price.\u00a0Current demand for wood is mainly due to low interest rates in the United States and Europe and the gap between supply and demand.\u00a0\u201cAt the moment it is very attractive to renovate your house, but at the same time there is little production.\u00a0Capacity in the sawmills has been lagging behind demand for years,\u201d says Nabuurs.\u00a0\u201cStocks in the trade are small.\u00a0And because many sawmills and logistics were closed in 2020, little wood was supplied and deliveries were delayed.\u00a0All this has caused the price of wood to rise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is there a shortage of wood?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, certainly not,\u201d emphasizes Mart-Jan Schelhaas.\u00a0\u201cThere is more wood in European forests than since the late Middle Ages.\u00a0Partly due to Eastern European countries such as Ukraine and Belarus, the European wood stock amounts to almost 35 billion m3 of wood.\u00a0By way of comparison: the entire Dutch forest contains approximately 80 million m3.\u00a0Every year, one billion m3 of wood is added and the harvest is only 600 million m3\/year.\u00a0So there is no shortage of wood, the European forest is even growing.\u201d\u00a0According to Nabuurs and Schelhaas, more timber construction makes little difference to the timber stock.\u00a0\u201cEven if the European Union wants to build 30% of its new houses with wood, equivalent to 300,000 homes per year, this will lead to an additional demand of 15 million m3 of wood.\u00a0Sweden alone produces more wood every year.\u201d\u00a0More timber construction therefore causes a small increase in demand.<\/p>\n

Investment has already started<\/strong><\/p>\n

The researchers expect the processing capacity in the wood industry to increase within one or two years.\u00a0Bas Lerink: \u201cThe sawmills are already investing in expanding capacity.\u00a0This will flatten prices again.\u00a0But also in the longer term, more attention is needed for forest management in the entire chain.\u00a0Certainly if we want to get rid of fossil fuels, the demand for wood will increase further.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
