Facing unprecedented lumber prices at home, US importers have massively purchased lumber from Europe in the first half of 2021.<\/em><\/p>\n

The frenzy comes after record US lumber imports from Europe in 2020, when North American demand soared and caught sawmills off guard with low inventories. Lumber prices in North America have reached new peaks on a near daily basis in the first half, quadrupling from just a year ago.<\/p>\n

The USA purchased definitely more softwood lumber from Europe again in January-June 2021 than it had in the same period of 2020. At 2.2 million m\u00b3, the imported volume of lumber was 43 % higher than a year earlier. At\u00a01,1 million\u00a0m\u00b3, the shipments from Germany were up 55 %. Germany clearly leads as the top EU lumber exporting country to the US, with a market share of 51%.<\/p>\n

Exports from Sweden, on the other hand, were down 5% to\u00a0429,812 m\u00b3 and those from Romania have more than doubled to\u00a0188,810 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

The overall export value increased to 139 % up to EUR 907 million, a clear sign that European sawmills managed to benefit from higher purchase prices in US.<\/p>\n

The average export price nearly doubled from EUR 238\/m\u00b3 in the first half of 2020 up to EUR 396\/m3 in the first half of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
