Projects were postponed in the course of the first wave of pandemics in 2020, so that the housing demand began to discharge as the restrictions eased. Construction activity picked up massively in EU countries, China and the USA.

All of this was not without consequences for Switzerland. Lumber is usually imported from abroad because it is simply cheaper. Swiss wood is more expensive than imported wood because of the higher labor costs and sustainable forestry. In addition, some products are simply not made in Switzerland.

The domestic wood suppliers moved back into focus and became competitive. “All of a sudden, those who normally bought cheaper wood from abroad weren't getting any more. And so the call for Swiss wood suddenly became very loud, ”said Florian Landolt from the Swiss Forest Association in an interview with the AWP news agency.

“The demand for local wood is benefiting from the price distortions that we have seen for lumber in recent months,” said Urs Luginbühl from the Swiss Wood Industry Association.

Short domestic supply chains

It wasn't just about the price, which was suddenly competitive, but also about the supply chains, which are simply shorter with domestic providers. In addition, prices in Switzerland have not risen as much as abroad, Luginbühl explained. However, the offer is only limited.

"From 2007 to 2020, the prices of lumber fell steadily," said the association's spokesman. For him, this has in particular to do with the appreciation of the Swiss franc. Importing wood from abroad was simply cheaper. "When the minimum exchange rate was lifted in 2015, it was a real shock for the local timber industry." The value of the goods collapsed overnight. The result was that many companies had to close or cut their production significantly.

Forest owners hardly notice the hype

What is often left out of the discussion about the price explosion for lumber, however, is the price of roundwood. As Mr. Landolt from the Swiss Forest Association emphasizes, the forest owners hardly received any of the hype. Rather, they have been struggling with ever-falling prices since the 1990s.

''The price increases have only reached a small part ofh the forest owners. Most of it took place in the context of the value chain, ”emphasized the expert.

As the latest data from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) shows, the timber business in Switzerland is anything but positive. Rather, the Swiss forest companies showed a deficit last year. Landolt says: "Many businesses are losing because the price of roundwood is at a record low level."

Landolt assumes that the demand for wood will remain high because it is essential as a sustainable building material and the political will to use it is great. Luginbühl welcomes the increased competitiveness of Swiss wood processors and the greater demand for Swiss wood, but is nevertheless a little more cautious. Local producers will only be able to expand their capacities again when the price increases have proven to be sustainable.

However, this seems more than questionable. Since the price peaked in May, an unprecedented slide has set in, bringing the price back to a level of below 500 US dollars most recently. At the same time, the prices for roundwood have risen somewhat recently, but still remain at a historically low level.

The Swiss wood market has been out of joint for months. Above all, the prices for lumber have practically exploded due to the high demand from the USA and China. Hardly any of this has reached Swiss forest owners. From spring 2020 … Continue reading →

[4716,4715,4714
3722,4209,3448
post-81087","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends","category-market-analysis","category-wood-industry-prices","tag-log-prices","tag-roundwood-prices","tag-switzerland","topic-forestry","topic-industry-prices","topic-sawmilling","area-europe

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
