Last week marked the 10th consecutive drop in wood prices.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"nativo-tout nativo-tout--in-content\">Not only are the gains completely wiped out, we're all the way back to 2018 levels. Last week, the \"cash\" market price fell to $472 per thousand board feet, according to data of\u00a0Random Lengths. That's down 69% from\u00a0its $1,515 all-time high in late May\u2014and 19% lower than its $582 peak price in the summer of 2018.<\/div>\n<p>Buying demand has been slow to come back, with the recent curtailments in BC over the last few weeks, losing its upward pressure on pricing. In OSB markets, the Composite fell $137 w\/w to $586, with distributors holding back orders waiting for the first sign of a bottom to this drop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lumber-219.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-26553\" src=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lumber-219-300x171.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lumber-219-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lumber-219.jpg 679w\" alt=\"\" width=\"453\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ed Egilinsky, managing director and head of alternative assets at Direxion, said that\u00a0three specific drivers are underpinning lumber in the coming weeks. These in confluence should significantly curtail the supply of lumber and push prices higher, he said.<\/p>\n<p>First is the tightening labor market. Egilinsky said this is the reason why fewer mills are in operation.<\/p>\n<p>His assertion was supported by new data that showed job openings in the US soaring to a record 10.1 million in June, which\u00a0exceeded\u00a0the number of available workers for the first time since the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Second is the raging wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>\"Fewer mills are in operation due to the wildfires,\" he said, adding some of the impacts of these remain unforeseen.<\/p>\n<div class=\"htlad-desktop_in_post_ad_1\" data-htlad=\"true\" data-unit=\"Markets-Insider\/Commodities\/News\" data-prebid=\"0x0:|768x0:Commodities\/News\/medrec|1261x0:Commodities\/News\/billboard_flex\">\u00a0These fires, for instance, have already affected major players, such as Canfor, one of the largest lumber producers in the US. The company on July 20\u00a0announced\u00a0cutting back output at its mills in British Columbia.<\/div>\n<p>Third is the emerging Delta variant.<\/p>\n<p>Egilinsky said the threat of the new strain might risk the shut down of sawmills, disrupting yet again a supply chain that is just about to bounce back.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This spring lumber prices went on a historic run\u2014shooting up over 300%\u2014but that&#8217;s\u00a0all over now.
