The French timber industry, with 60,000 companies and nearly 400,000 jobs, intends to quadruple its market share in construction over the next 10 years, in order to decarbonize the building sector, responsible for nearly 19% of carbon emissions of the country.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"To decarbonize the building sector, we must go from 7% of wooden housing to a significant proportion \": (...) \"we can think 30%, in the next 10 years , mainly via the mix of materials used\", estimated Frederic Carteret, president of France Bois Industrie Entreprise, an association which brings together wood processing companies.<\/p>\n

This objective implies better forest management, more plantations, and massive investments in processing tools in order to reduce production costs.<\/p>\n

Suitable species<\/strong><\/p>\n

The forest industry therefore commits to planting trees. \"We must follow a path of planting one tree per French person per year, or ultimately around 70 million trees per year until 2035, \" said Carteret.<\/p>\n

\"The species will have to be adapted to global warming, coming from France or other countries, such as cedar or sequoia \" said Michel Druilhe, president of France Bois For\u00eat.<\/p>\n

France currently only harvests 60% of the organic growth of trees, which leaves room for improvement for the exploitation of the forest without harming the natural balance.<\/p>\n

After undergoing massive deforestation between the Ice Age and the 19th century for agricultural, food and energy needs, falling to 8.5 million hectares in 1850, the French forest now covers 17 million hectares, which makes the 3rd largest forest stock in Europe.<\/p>\n

800 M \u20ac per year of investment<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the timber industry, very fragmented between a multitude of small private owners, small and medium-sized enterprises, alongside the State which maintains the public forest, has difficulty in being competitive. The market share of French timber is only 30 to 35% in new constructions in France compared to imports.<\/p>\n

For Luc Charmasson, who heads the strategic timber committee, the investment need over the next 5 years is 800 million euros per year , in order to meet the objectives set by the government in the recent environmental regulations known as RE2020, which should make it possible to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050.<\/p>\n
