The Australian log industry has been severely affected as the Chinese authorities decided to suspend the import of logs from Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia.

In previous years, China accounted for more than 90% of Australia's log exports, and Australia's annual timber trade volume to China reached 1.6 billion Australian dollars (1.23 billion US dollars). Now, due to the suspension of trade of about 4 million tons of logs between China and Australia, logging, consignment and port operations have been delayed, and at least thousands of related people to lose their jobs.

According to related reports, by March of this year, the Australian timber industry had suffered heavy losses, and relevant industry organizations continued to put pressure on the government. Although Australian officials have tried to actively seek China to open timber import trade by providing Australian timber pesticidal quarantine certificates, they have not received a response from the Chinese side. This means that Australia has little hope of resuming its timber exports to China.

Faced with the dilemma of gradually losing China, a major customer, the Australian government has been looking for a substitute in the Chinese market. There are only a handful of countries in the world that can withstand such a large amount of timber export quotas like China. After several months of negotiations, relevant Australian industries have no choice but to consider India as an alternative market.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in India, the cumulative number of infections has reached 300 million, and more than 400,000 deaths. India's timber industry chain has been affected in all directions, making timber a scarce resource in India. Due to the large number of deaths, the ordinary wood used for cremation has basically been exhausted, and the Indian capital New Delhi is in a state of wood crisis, as well as in the whole country.

Ordinary wood cannot be supplied, and wood used for processing and manufacturing is also in trouble. The increase in global production costs and shipping costs has made it difficult for India to escape the impact of skyrocketing prices in the international timber market. The price increase in hardwood for home furnishing, teak for doors and windows, and pine for packaging materials in India has increased by 20-25%.

Under such strong pressure, India chose the strategy of increasing revenue and reducing expenditure to save the domestic timber industry. The skyrocketing timber prices have suppressed market demand. The news that Australian timber has been rejected by China is even more of a help for India. In May, Australia's log exports amounted to 158,095 cubic meters, most of which were accepted by India.

India has become the main market for Australian timber exports, and the government intends to use between 10 billion and 11 billion US dollars to establish 3 or 4 furniture industry cluster centers or industrial hubs near Indian ports and timber production areas to support the local industry.

Can India really replace China as an important trading partner with Australia? According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2019, China was Australia’s largest export target country, with exports to China of US$103.435 billion, accounting for 38.09% of its total exports, and a trade surplus with China of US$48.383 billion; and in 2019 , Australia’s exports to India were 9.84 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 3.62% of its total exports, and its trade surplus with India was 6.599 billion U.S. dollars.

The data contrast is very sharp. India may be able to become an important export destination for Australia after many years of development, but at the moment, India's size still cannot solve the imminent problems of Australian companies.

In November 2020, China claimed that harmful organisms were detected in multiple batches of logs imported from Australia.
