As the real estate demand has gradually begun to resume in India, the demand for processed timber has begun to grow. 70% of the timber demand in India is consumed in the timber-making cluster at Gandhidham and Kandla.<\/em><\/p>\n

Because of the aggressive second Covid-wave in the country, the demand for processed timber, which is widely used in making furniture and wood-based panels, such as particleboard and plywood, and toys, declined by 25%, according to industry insiders.<\/p>\n

Navneet Gujjar, president of the Kandla Timber Association said: ''As markets have resumed, naturally, demand has begun to pick up. Even though we have increased the prices of timber due to the rise in freight costs, customers are willing to buy out more. We expect the sales to return to the level of March in one month''.<\/p>\n

At the moment, India is confronted with softwood prices that are now even higher than in December 2020 \u2013 when they were 25-30% above the normal. Pine lumber now costs almost\u00a0350 \u20ac\/m3 and prices from New Zealand are as high as those from Europe. Plywood prices are not decreasing despite low demand because of an increase in prices for glue.<\/p>\n

The current chaotic market situation causes challenges. Despite being a nation of import, India tries not to buy at the highest prices, this leads to a low ranking country on the priority list for deliveries, because countries like China get preferential treatment in terms of supply. With that comes unsure shipping and delivery dates.<\/p>\n
