According to official statistics, Austria's timber prices are now rising. Austrian sawmills are in full swing and they sell their wood products at record prices. Unlike in previous months, now it's beginning to be seen in the payment to forest owners.<\/p>\n

Austria's timber prices - 48% up in one year<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the Landwirtschaftskammer \u00d6sterreich, the price for the most common spruce roundwood qualities has now in June exceeded 100 Euro \/ m3fub *. That is just over EUR 98.80 per cubic meter fixed dimension under bark (m3fub). This applies to the whole country, including areas affected by bark beetles. Stocks of lumber are low and demand is high and this is now what is affecting timber prices.<\/p>\n

The price for the most common quality of spruce logs in Austria. The latest listing refers to April 2021 and since then the price has increased further and is now over 100 Euro \/ m3fub . The average price over the past 10 years has been around 90 Euro \/ m3fub . Source: lko.at<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If you look historically, the Landwirtschaftskammer \u00d6sterreich agrees that the average price for the last 10 years (spruce sawlogs) is around EUR 89 \/ m3fub with a price peak in the autumn of 2013 above EUR 100 \/ m3fub. The latest figures show that in April 2021 the price was around EUR 93 \/ m3fub, but the prices now in exceed EUR 100 \/ m3fub throughout the country after continued price increases in May and June. In areas hard hit by bark beetle damage, timber prices have been lower than in other parts of Austria, but even there the prices are now over EUR 100 \/ m3fub.<\/p>\n

Higher price for forest owners to sell<\/strong><\/p>\n

The reason why Austria's timber prices are rising is that the huge market boom that prevails for sawn timber products is now also having an impact on the raw materials sector. This happens because the timber stocks are sawn and that new timber purchased by the sawmills must be paid with higher prices for the forest owners to want to sell. The basic law of supply and demand simply.<\/p>\n

In total, the Austrian sawmills sawed 10.6 million m3 of sawn goods in 2020 and for this it took about 18 million m3fub of timber. The Austrian sawmills are dependent on extensive timber imports as domestic logging is not enough. Almost 50% of the timber needed by sawmills is imported from neighboring countries.<\/p>\n

The high activity in both felling and lumber production generates large volumes of by-products such as wood chips, shavings and bark. This in turn means that the stocks of these assortments are built up and prices fall. A major user of the sawmill's chips (the difference between round logs and square timber) is different types of board industry. There are several large wood-based panel companies in Austria, such as Kronospan and Egger, which manufacture chipboard, OSB, MDF and other types of board material for the construction and furniture industry.<\/p>\n

Right now there is an abundance of raw materials for these companies, but despite that, the official prices are still reasonable for these ranges.<\/p>\n
