Currently, the Latvian lumber market\u00a0is experiencing a significant price increase or bubble, which will sooner or later burst,\u00a0Kristaps Klauss, Executive Director of the Latvian Wood Industry Federation (LKF) stated for the Latvian media.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

He explained that 90% to 95% of the industry's processing output, excluding firewood, is exported, so that the price of the output is largely determined by developments in foreign markets.\u00a0In Europe, the prices of lumber have doubled during the year, in the US - even three times.\u00a0In turn, the rise in prices for wooden furniture has been \"unusually large\" of 5% and 8%.\u00a0This means that raw material prices have risen sharply, but the increase in the price of the final product is relatively small.<\/p>\n

\n

\" It's not the new normal. It's a bubble in the lumber markets, and right now we don't really understand when it's going to burst,\" Klaus said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There is also an increase in prices in the Latvian sawlog market - especially for softwood sawlogs.\u00a0On the other hand, for pulpwood, it's difficult to sell and prices are very low, well below average.\u00a0Meanwhile, the hardwood segment has not seen such a sharp rise in prices, for example, the birch plywood prices have not increased significantly.\u00a0Birch veneer logs do not have such a price increase at the moment, rather there are declines compared to last year, Klaus said.<\/p>\n

Those who have good softwood fellings are the winners now.\u00a0For example, if, on average, 15,000 euros per hectare were paid in \"normal times\", more than 20,000 euros per hectare can now be obtained.<\/p>\n

The head of the Latvian Wood Industry Federation pointed out that the current prices of wood primary products are not adequate.<\/p>\n

\"It's not just in the timber market, it's the same in the plastics and metals industry, it's in a lot of primary products [segments],\" Klaus said.<\/p>\n

He noted that the raw materials market was \"torn\" by the Covid-19 pandemic, which slowed down production.\u00a0However, contrary to expectations, demand has remained or even increased, including people renovating their homes a lot during the pandemic, Klaus said.<\/p>\n

He noted that for all those people who had decided to build something this summer, it is better not to do it and postpone work until next summer, when the situation in the timber market could return to normal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
