The outlook for the Finnish forest industry is quite positive, Danske Bank's economic information estimated. Demand for packaging materials has been strong throughout the corona pandemic, the price of pulp has been rising sharply and the demand for sawn timber has also been brisk.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, surely every sawmill is sawing what it can. This is the lumber boom of all time, \u201d says Antti Koskivuori , Danske Bank's equity analyst .<\/p>\n

Of the forest industry's product areas, paper is the only segment that has nothing positive to say. Last year's big drop - demand for graphic paper fell by a third in Europe - has been hoped for, but the decline is still at 15 per cent. However, Koskivuori thinks that in some time period it will return to a \u201cnormal\u201d decline of 5%.<\/p>\n

Despite the paper's problems, the bank will give Finnish forest companies an average of 61 per cent increase in operating profit this year. Net sales are expected to grow by 8 percent.<\/p>\n

Pulp price question mark<\/strong><\/p>\n

The challenge for the future is the price of pulp. Prices are now at record levels, but in China they are already slightly folded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt remains to be seen how prices will develop in Europe. Usually they follow Chinese prices, \u201dsays Koskivuori.<\/p>\n

Even if pulp prices start to fall, this year's results for forest companies will still be good.<\/p>\n

The peak cycle of sawmills will also be reversed at some point.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuessing the timing is challenging. So far, there are no signs of a turnaround, but it will definitely come at some point. \u201d<\/p>\n

Order one or two more<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Koskivuori, the use of wood in the forest industry in Finland is already starting to reach the upper limits in terms of investments. However, there could still be room for one or two pulp mills, depending on the size.<\/p>\n

\"The big picture is that we are already approaching the border in the use of wood,\" says Koskivuori.<\/p>\n

However, investments are being made. Paper machines are turned on board and investments are also made in new products. However, it is unclear whether these investments will hit Finland.<\/p>\n
