Polish sawmills are struggling with rising wood prices. Currently, in the free market, they have to pay for the raw material many times the amount they paid in January. However, the end of price increases is not in sight.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Wood is one of the most dynamically expensive raw materials today. Since the beginning of this year, lumber price has increased in Poland by nearly 70 percent. According to representatives of the Polish wood market contacted by GWMI, the price spiral has been winding up since the end of last year. In January, the average price of the wood raw material was PLN 250 per cubic meter (54.81 EUR\/m3), and now it reaches PLN 400 (87.70 EUR\/m3) in June.<\/p>\n

Shopping frenzy drives prices up. There are at least several reasons for this situation. The summer season is approaching, during which the most wooden houses are built.<\/p>\n

The demand for wood is also growing abroad. The launch of the housing construction program in the USA, which exhausted local resources and, as a result, the building material began to be collected from abroad. The Chinese also have an increased appetite for wood.<\/p>\n

As a result, the export of wood from Poland and Europe is today at a record level. The lack of export restrictions also drives prices.<\/p>\n

According to Rafa\u0142 Szefler, the director of the Polish Chamber of Commerce of the Wood Industry, the demand for wood was also increased by the pandemic itself, because many Poles decided to renovate and invest in houses, so prices soared.
