In January-May, purchases of logs in Finland rose by 48 percent year-on-year, while prices for softwood logs increased by almost 20%.<\/em><\/p>\n

In January-May, the member companies of the Finnish Forest Industries Association bought 14.2 million cubic meters of wood from private forests.\u00a0That\u2019s a quarter more than in the same period last year.<\/p>\n

Demand for logs in particular has increased.\u00a0Nearly 7 million cubic meters of logs were purchased in January-May, which is 48 percent more than a year ago.\u00a0Purchases of pulpwood rose by only 8 percent.<\/p>\n

Prices also rose.\u00a0According to forest industry statistics, the stock prices of softwood logs were 17\u201319 per cent higher in May than in May of the previous year.\u00a0Pulp prices increased by 8-9 per cent.<\/p>\n

\"The sharp rise in costs makes it difficult for the Finnish forest industry to compete on the international market,\" the organization recalls.<\/p>\n

In May, an average of EUR 64 per cubic meter was paid for pine sawlogs in Finland, and the price varied between EUR 38 and 68, depending on the felling method and the area. The average price of a spruce sawlogs was 68 euros per cubic meter, and the price varied between 38 and 70 euros.
