The timber was reportedly used to make some of Ikea\u2019s most popular items, including the folding, slatted Terje chair and the Ingolf dining chair. Hundreds may have made their way into UK homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIkea is the biggest consumer of timber in the world, and it\u2019s using illegal wood from Ukraine for some of its most popular products, products that people are buying on a daily basis,\u201d Sam Lawson, director of Earthsight, claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Ikea insisted it does not accept illegally logged wood in its products, and said it has launched an investigation in the findings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FSC certification<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The allegations centre on the operation of the FSC certification system in Ukraine and beyond. Ikea demands that all its wood is FSC certified, but according to Earthsight enforcement of FSC rules in Ukraine is lax, allowing corrupt forestry enterprises to flout the rules and still sell certified timber.<\/p>\n<p>Earthsight alleges FSC\u2019s audit process \u2013 which sees profit-making audit companies compete for business from loggers \u2013 means this type of corruption is happening in Ukraine and elsewhere. \u201cThere\u2019s a fundamental conflict of interest,\u201d said Mr Lawson.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the allegations, FSC said it is \u201cfully aware of the difficult environment in Ukraine\u201d pointing out it has terminated certificates from 29 organisations in Ukraine in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the Earthsight report has highlighted some cases where the system has failed, it has not addressed the many thousands of cases where FSC has succeeded,\u201d it added in a statement. \u201cEarthsight has also only reflected the views of those who agree with them; not the views of the many environmentalists and social activists that fully support FSC because of the positive impact we have had on the ground across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23891\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ikea-30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23891\" src=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ikea-30-300x200.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ikea-30-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ikea-30.jpg 84w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ikea-30.jpg 760w\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23891\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-23891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>General view outside of IKEA as it reopens to the public on June 01, 2020 in Southampton, United Kingdom.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Price pressure?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earthsight claims the corruption in Ukranian forestry was exacerbated by Ikea\u2019s business model of providing low-cost furniture, which it argued was driving down prices in the supply chain to unsustainable levels. Logging firms \u201creally have little choice but to accept Ikea\u2019s prices, and it\u2019s hardly surprising they cut corners as a result,\u201d Mr Lawson argued.<\/p>\n<p>He called on Ikea to raise its prices and step up its internal audits of supply chains. \u201c[IKEA] need to interrogate those supply chains themselves and do their own audits in the forest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ikea has some of the most ambitious environmental policies of any corporate in the world, with a promise to be \u201cclimate positive\u201d by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe welcome reports and findings by NGOs and take them very seriously,\u201d it said in a statement. \u201cWe have immediately begun investigating the allegations and are committed to engaging further with Earthsight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe acknowledge that illegal logging remains a widespread global issue, and work proactively to implement measures to verify that our suppliers comply with legality and our requirements,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>Ikea also defended FSC certification as \u201cthe most robust and credible global forest certification available\u201d.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from ancient forests in Ukraine.
