Wood pellet production in Spain has increased by 20% in the last year, reaching a record volume of 714,000 tons in 2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

In 2022, the production of pellets is expected to be over 900,000 tons.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Spain had 29 pellet mills that produced 150,000 tons, mainly destined for the foreign market. In 2019, the 82 factories operating in Spain have produced 714,000 tons with the main destination being the internal market, which is also 20% more than in 2018.<\/p>\n

Of this production, 77% is for domestic use, with 15-kilogram bags being the most common form of consumption in the domestic market. These are data from the Annual Statistical Report on the Pellet Market in Spain that has recently been prepared by AVEBIOM, the Spanish Association of Biomass Energy Valorization.<\/p>\n

Another feature of the Spanish market is that consumers demand the EN plus \u00ae seal , the most recognized quality certificate in the international arena. 82% of the pellet that was manufactured in 2019 was certified under this seal.<\/p>\n

The production of Castilla y Le\u00f3n stands out with more than 223,000 tons, followed by Catalonia with 97,000 tons and thirdly by Galicia with a production of 86,000 tons. On the other hand, there are factories in 16 of the 17 autonomous communities, which has generated thousands of new stable jobs in rural areas.<\/p>\n

Manufacturing adjustment expected in 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to being a record year in terms of production, 2019 has also been a record volume imported from Portugal. An excess of production in the neighboring country, caused by lower demand from the British market, has facilitated the entry into Spain of 160,000 tons of pellets.<\/p>\n

This increase in imports, together with the mild autumn in Spain, has caused the warehouses of Spanish manufacturers and distributors to be full and the plants have not hesitated to adjust the pace of manufacturing to adapt to current demand.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, because of COVID-19, the installation of new boilers and pellet stoves has slowed down, so it is expected that the increase in consumption in Spain during 2020 will remain at 2%, when the trend of average growth of pellet consumption in Spain in the last three years was 12%.<\/p>\n

The expectations for the production of wood pellets in Spain in 2022 are much more optimistic than for 2020, with a figure that will approach 900,000 tons. Despite the abnormal collapse in oil prices, a series of legislative measures are expected from the Government of Spain to boost the use of renewable energy in the coming years.<\/p>\n
