The bark beetle infestation which hit the Central European countries resulted in overproduction and a sharp fall in prices determining Latvian producer to adjust prices.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the 2nd\u00a0half of 2019, compared to the 1st\u00a0half of 2019, the average purchase prices both of softwood roundwood and of hardwood roundwood fell considerably in Latvia. The largest drop was recorded in the prices of black alder sawlogs in diameter 18\u201324\u00a0cm, while the smallest decline was observed in the prices of aspen sawlogs in diameter 18\u201324\u00a0cm.<\/p>\n

Compared to the 1st half, in the 2nd half of 2019 the sharpest drop in softwood roundwood sector was registered in prices of pine and spruce sawlogs in diameter under 14 cm (on average of 19 % or 11 EUR\/m3), pine roundwood in diameter 14\u201318 cm (on average of 18 % or 13 EUR\/m3). Smaller decrease was recorded in prices of pine sawlogs in diameter 18\u201326 cm, spruce sawlogs in diameter over 26 cm (on average of 14 % or 11-12 EUR\/m3), pine round timber in diameter over 26 cm (on average of 13 % or 10 EUR\/m3). Prices of spruce sawlogs in diameter 14\u201318 cm and 18\u201326 cm reduced the least \u2013 on average 9 EUR\/m3.<\/p>\n

After the 1st half of 2019, when prices in the European timber exchange were unusually high and, despite that in the conditions of warm and wet winter logging was more complicated and more expensive, there was a downturn in purchase prices of roundwood in the 2nd quarter of 2019.<\/span>\u00a0Drop in prices can be explained with the fact that production suppliers were forced to compete inflow of timber damaged by bark beetle and cheaper raw materials in Sweden, Germany and Czech Republic, which resulted in overproduction in a number of segments of goods.<\/p>\n

Compared to the 1st\u00a0half, in the 2nd\u00a0half of 2019 the most notable drop within the hardwood roundwood sector was observed in prices of black alder sawlogs in diameter 18\u201324\u00a0cm \u2013 of 30\u00a0% or EUR\u00a011\/m3. Smaller decrease was observed in prices of birch veneer logs of category\u00a0B (on average of 12\u00a0% or EUR\u00a09\/m3), of black alder sawlogs in diameter over 24\u00a0cm (on average of 10\u00a0% or EUR\u00a05\/m3) and of packing timber (on average of 10\u00a0% or EUR\u00a04\/m3), of veneer logs of category\u00a0A (of 6\u00a0% or average of EUR\u00a06\/m3\u00a0), of asp sawlogs in diameter over 24\u00a0cm (of 4\u00a0% or EUR\u00a02\/m3) and of asp sawlogs in diameter of 18\u201324\u00a0cm \u2013 of 3\u00a0% or EUR\u00a01\/m3. Slight rise was recorded in the purchase prices of birch sawlogs in diameter of 18\u201324\u00a0cm (on average of 1\u00a0% or EUR\u00a00.4\/m3), but of birch sawlogs in diameter over 24\u00a0cm \u2013 of 3\u00a0% or EUR\u00a02\/m3.<\/p>\n

Since the 1st\u00a0half of 2009, out of all softwood roundwood prices of spruce sawlogs in diameter under 14\u00a0cm (on average of 91\u00a0% or EUR\u00a023\/m3) and of pine sawlogs in diameter under 14\u00a0cm (of 81\u00a0% or EUR\u00a022\/m3) have grown the most. Purchase prices of other pine sawlogs grew within the limits between 60\u00a0% and 66\u00a0%, while of spruce sawlogs \u2013 between 61\u00a0% and 69\u00a0%. Out of softwood round timber prices of pine sawlogs in diameter of 14\u00a0cm have increased the least (on average of 60\u00a0% or EUR\u00a024\/m3).<\/p>\n

Over this period, purchase prices of hardwood roundwood increased the most on veneer logs of category\u00a0A \u2013 of 103\u00a0% or EUR\u00a049\/m3, but on veneer logs of category\u00a0B \u2013 of 68\u00a0% or EUR\u00a027\/m3. A rise was also registered in purchase prices of birch round timber in diameter over 24\u00a0cm on 77\u00a0% or average of EUR\u00a029\/m3\u00a0and of deciduous tree packing timber on average of 74\u00a0% or EUR\u00a016\/m3. Purchase prices of asp sawlogs have grown within the limits between 66\u00a0% and 67\u00a0%. The smallest price increase was recorded in black alder sawlogs in diameter over 24\u00a0cm (on average of 15\u00a0% or EUR\u00a06\/m3).
