During the coronavirus crisis, nearly half of the companies in the Chinese wood industry reported that the epidemic had a great impact on their production, and their operations were almost stopped. At the moment, most enterprises face problems such as shortage of raw material inventory, insufficient labor force, lack of working capital and rising freight rates.\u00a0With regard to the export trade of timber and wood products, the epidemic caused a decline in the efficiency of transportation and port unloading, and the export orders of timber operating and processing enterprises significantly decreased.\u00a0The increased risk of the global epidemic has also brought uncertainty to companies to resume production and cash flow.<\/em><\/p>\n

Affected by factors such as shutdown and production shutdown, the output of China's timber industry is relatively severely damaged. The coronavirus caused the output of the wood processing industry, furniture industry and paper industry to decline by 2.30%, 2.48% and 1.91%, respectively.<\/p>\n

Among them, the drop in total factor productivity caused by the shutdown and production of enterprises played a major role, reducing the average output of the industry by 1.78%; the decline in labor productivity caused by the gradual resumption of work reduced the average output of the industry by 0.55%. The average decline was 2.33%.\u00a0This is mainly because the timber industry, as a typical manufacturing industry, relies on substantial production inputs such as labor, machinery and equipment. Once a link is interrupted, it will trigger a chain reaction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Correspondingly, to compensate for the production capacity by extending the working hours and duration after the epidemic also depends on the cooperation of various links in the industry chain, so the compensation for the loss of production capacity during the epidemic is relatively limited.\u00a0In addition, wood products mainly meet the needs of industrial production, infrastructure, decoration and furniture, and the home model during the epidemic has restrained this demand.\u00a0At the same time, the decline in export demand has also led to a substantial reduction in orders from wood processing companies, leading to shrinking output in the wood industry.<\/p>\n

The epidemic has pushed up the production cost of China's timber industry and weakened product price competitiveness.\u00a0The coronavirus crisis caused the prices of wood processing industry, furniture industry and paper industry to rise by 0.51%, 0.78% and 1.03% respectively.\u00a0This is mainly due to the impact of extended holidays and postponed resumption of work, many wood processing and processing enterprises can not operate normally and profit.<\/p>\n

The increase in production and operating costs has reduced the price competitiveness of wood processed products, which will have an impact on China's wood industry, which mainly depends on volume growth.\u00a0Although the reduction in household consumption, investment demand and export demand has a certain effect on lowering domestic factor prices, the increase in production costs caused by the decline in production efficiency has played a leading role in driving up the product prices of the timber industry.<\/p>\n

The share of trade between China's timber industry and the international market has declined.\u00a0The coronavirus epidemic caused exports of the wood processing industry, furniture industry and paper industry to decline by 2.07%, 3.29% and 3.44%, respectively.\u00a0This is mainly because the epidemic has raised the production cost of the timber industry, resulting in insufficient export of timber products, which has reduced the share of wood processed products, furniture and paper products in the international market.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the upstream and downstream correlation effects of the industrial chain will also increase the impact of the epidemic on the timber industry.\u00a0For example, the furniture industry is an export-oriented industry, and the proportion of exports in total output is 39.2%.\u00a0Therefore, due to the decline in transportation efficiency and increase in trade costs, foreign consumers' demand for Chinese furniture has decreased, which has increased the shrinkage of the output scale of the furniture industry, thereby reducing their demand for intermediate inputs of upstream wood processing industry products, leading to the wood processing industry. Output fell further.<\/p>\n

The reduction and exemption of value-added tax is more effective in alleviating the negative impact of the timber industry, and the liquidity of investment will adversely affect the export trade of the timber industry.\u00a0At present, the introduction of VAT reduction measures in China for small-scale taxpayers can alleviate the output losses of the wood processing industry, furniture industry, and paper industry by 0.28%, 0.07%, and 0.10%, respectively.<\/p>\n

It should be pointed out that China's central bank's market liquidity has mainly stimulated investment demand and output expansion in investment industries such as the construction industry.\u00a0In contrast, the timber industry belongs to the typical traditional manufacturing industry, and is not the object of capital for profit.\u00a0The increase in market liquidity not only did not ease the financing pressure of the timber industry, but increased its labor costs, which further reduced exports of the wood processing industry, furniture industry and paper industry by 6.19%, 5.17% and 3.97%.<\/p>\n

The above identified the path that the epidemic situation may affect the timber industry in China from the supply side and the demand side, and analyzed the impact of the government's implementation of macroeconomic response measures on the timber industry.<\/p>\n

Firstly, the coroonavirus crisis has pushed up the production cost of the Chinese timber industry, resulting in an average output loss of 2.23% in the timber industry, which is higher than the average output loss of all industries by 1.75%, leading to a 2.93% decline in export demand.\u00a0Second, after the government adopted economic countermeasures, the average output loss of the timber industry was 2.61%, an increase of 0.38 percentage points compared with the absence of countermeasures.\u00a0From the perspective of the heterogeneity of the impact of the response measures, the reduction of VAT on mitigating the negative impact of the timber industry is more effective, while the liquidity of investment has a limited effect on reducing the financing cost of the timber industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
