India has taken drastic measures against the spread of the coronavirus entering a strict lockdown. The 1.3 billion Indian population is only allowed to leave the house for shopping. The measure is imposed for the next 21 days.<\/em><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a televised speech: \"If we don't manage these 21 days well, the country will be set back by 21 years. Many families will be destroyed forever,\" said the Prime Minister. Only grocery stores, pharmacies and banks were still open.\u00a0Metros, trains, rickshaws and flights at home and abroad no longer operate in India.<\/p>\n

All sawmills in India, importers, wholesalers, retailers, pallet and wooden packaging manufacturers are closed during the lockdown period. Moreover, port operations are also closed, many Indian importers contacted by GWMI expressing their concern about their arriving containers, which can't get custom clearance as no custom agent is working at the moment.<\/p>\n

Other Indian wood industry companies contacted by GWMI complained that they've ceased imports as orders from their customers are slowing down. Furthermore, the hike in ocean freight costs has made imports unaffordable to many importers, amplified by a devaluation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar and euro.<\/p>\n

From now on and until the lockdown expires, April 14, nothing is operational in the Indian wood industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
