in stand-by\u2026 The coronavirus obviously does not spare the wood sector and in particular the specialized exporters in China.\u00a0<em>\"We are facing a global crisis whose systemic consequences are disrupting trade and greatly disrupting the maritime transport sector\"<\/em>\u00a0, says Emmanuel Groutel, a\u00a0<\/span>Director of Wood and Logistics Expert at Wale.<span id=\"more-22743\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He says that the port of Shanghai, which normally employs 90,000 people, operated at the height of the Chinese coronavirus crisis with less than 10,000 employees.\u00a0At the same time, other Chinese ports were only operating at 80% of their capacity.\u00a0While the recovery of activities seems to be starting in Chinese industries, the logistics chain is broken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This extraordinary global crisis affects French timber exports.\u00a0David Roy,\u00a0Director of DSHwood France, a company which markets more than 50,000 m3 \/ year of logs mainly exported to China, explains that the situation has become particularly complicated in recent times.\u00a0<em>\u201cWood exporters have just endured three consecutive events.\u00a0We first had to endure a chaotic end of the year with the transport strike which resulted in large volumes of timber remaining at the quay, deferred turnover and letters of credit with expired dates.\u00a0\"<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then there was the Chinese New Year, an event which was certainly predictable but which blocks the Chinese economy every year for almost 3 weeks.\u00a0It is an opportunity for workers from large industrial centers to return to the countryside to visit their families.\u00a0<em>\u201cBut<\/em>, continues David Roy,\u00a0<em>with the arrival of the coronavirus, many confined people were unable to reach their workplaces.\u00a0The factories could not restart and the shipping companies suspended their traffic from Chinese ports.\u00a0\"<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For the timber trade, two major consequences arise from this unprecedented situation.\u00a0On the one hand, European and French ports lack containers.\u00a0On the other hand, the costs of sea freight have just increased considerably.\u00a0<em>\"On the France-China destination, a 40-foot container priced at $ 600-700 in early January, is now worth $1000-1300<\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0<em>\"<\/em>\u00a0says an exporter who expects a further increase in April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The consequences of this doubling of prices hit first the export products with low added value.\u00a0This is the case with spruce.\u00a0<em>\u201cThe bark beetle damaged wood cannot bear such an increase in transport costs.\u00a0Very large quantities are awaiting shipment with the risk of significant degradation of the wood as soon as winter is over, \u201d<\/em>\u00a0comments Nicolas Talpin,\u00a0managing exporter of AFG Bois.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Regarding beech, he\u00a0believes that the season is already over.\u00a0<em>\"It was one of my hardest years, I am emptying my stocks and I am glad that it is ending because the margins have eroded considerably.\u00a0\"<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Michel Jacquin,\u00a0the manager of Bois 39,\u00a0notes that beech shipments to the Maghreb are also affected by the increase in costs of sea freight.\u00a0On the other hand, he notices a stability in ash orders among Vietnamese users.\u00a0<em>\"It is a very competitive price market which is also impacted by the rise in transport costs\"<\/em>\u00a0, estimates this exporter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Oak is undoubtedly the species that best resists the general panic, Chinese demand remaining dynamic.\u00a0<em>\u201cIndeed, many of our oaks leave for the port of Dalian, in the north of China.\u00a0This rural area has not been infested with the virus.\u00a0In addition, most of the workers are locals who live there and who were therefore not affected by the travel bans at the end of the Chinese New Year.\u00a0The factories have returned to normal and require wood, \u201d<\/em>\u00a0says David Roy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For the future, the question is obviously to know what will be the consequences for the general economy of the last containment measures taken by European governments.\u00a0For their part and in the short term, the exporters will have to solve a delicate equation, one being logistics: when the activity revives again in China, how to find available containers and up to what price level they can be rented for transport with a
