{"id":78924,"date":"2020-03-23T11:03:51","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T11:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/container-lines-face-sharp-fall-revenues-coronavirus-crisis-continues\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:52:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:52:54","slug":"container-lines-face-sharp-fall-revenues-coronavirus-crisis-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/container-lines-face-sharp-fall-revenues-coronavirus-crisis-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Container lines face sharp fall in revenues as coronavirus crisis continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Container lines could be facing a $17bn shortfall in revenues this year as developed economies\u2019 efforts to halt the spread of coronavirus lead to a slump in demand.<\/em><span id=\"more-22701\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite the rapidly improving situation in China, which is seeing manufacturing and logistics return to normal levels following the extended shutdown from February, the spread of coronavirus beyond China has led to drastic measures being taken in both Europe and the US, with other developed economies following suit.<\/p>\n<p>In its latest analysis of the coronavirus outbreak, SeaIntelligence said that the efforts to curb the spread of the disease could easily lead to a drop in demand for container shipping in the coming weeks, not just from China but from all sourcing locations.<\/p>\n<p>The effects of the retrenchment in demand are \u201cworryingly similar\u201d to those seen during the recession of 2008-09, SeaIntelligence said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are to assess the potential impact on the container shipping industry from the coronavirus outbreak, a comparison with the financial crisis becomes quite relevant,\u201d it said. \u201cAnd, very simply, the impact of the financial crisis was a 10% decline in container volumes in 2009.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That 10% decline in volumes applied to 2020 would equate to 17m teu, or roughly $17bn in revenues, it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPositive news is clearly coming out of China in terms of container shipping volumes and logistics developments,\u201d SeaIntelligence chief executive Alan Murphy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of\u00a0vessel calls\u00a0in Chinese ports is normalising, and indications are that manufacturing and inland logistics are gradually also getting back towards a level of normality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he added that the problems were clearly not over.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Container lines could be facing a $17bn shortfall in revenues this year as developed economies\u2019 efforts to halt the spread of coronavirus lead to a slump in demand.
