While the virus is still spreading, the industry is expected to continue to take government restrictions and precautions.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many manufacturers of cork board have extended their shutdowns, which were originally expected to continue until the Chinese New Year celebration. Throughout February, thousands of employees worked from home. Prolonged shutdowns have slowed down operations at Chinese ports, causing delays in container handling. Interprovincial trucking restrictions have slowed port speeds.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, vessels that ship cork and other cargo to Chinese ports have been relocated to South Korea and other alternative destinations. Canadian exporters noted that earlier this month plans or delays in shipping Western SPF to China were cancelled as the ships were diverted to avoid Chinese ports. To prevent coronavirus, some industry gatherings have been postponed, cancelled or relocated. Many North American exporters have cancelled regular sales itineraries to China, India, and other parts of Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, some Canadian exporters resumed work and resumed exports to China as usual. Some observers expect trade to resume striding this month and return to normal in April. For most of 2019, there is too much timber inventories at Chinese ports and heavy burdens, which put downward pressure on prices and limited demand for SPF. These accumulations eased in early 2020, which could increase China's supply demand after factories resume normal operations.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian government banned truck and rail transport to China until further notice, effective January 31, and stopped cross-border shipments of wood products. The new rules closed 16 customs checkpoints on the China-Russia border. Russia is a major supplier of Chinese softwood panels. Insufficient shipments this month have led to a reduction in China's softwood lumber supply.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. exporters to China hope to ease tensions surrounding the U.S.-China trade war to help restore sales growth later this year. U.S. softwood lumber exports to China have fallen by 54% in 2019, the lowest annual total in ten years. Trade war-related tariffs were the main reason for the decline. However, China has reduced tariffs on imports of thousands of American products since this month.
