Republic: Bark beetle infestation to double this year and again next year"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li class=\"detail-odstavec\"><em>Bark beetle will attack up to 60 million cubic meters of wood this year in the Czech Republic, and next year, the volume of damaged wood can double up to 120 million cubic meters.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">In the following years, due to the fact that less than half of the original spruce stands remain in the damaged area, the numbers of infected trees is expected to decrease.\u00a0This is estimated by the think-tank Czech Forest in its medium-term forecast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">This development is conditional on the continuation of bark beetle calamity development as it has been in the last five years.\u00a0Since 2017, the volume of wood attacked has doubled every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">The Czech Forestry and Woodworking Enterprises Association (ALDP) has already responded to the forecast, calling on the Ministries of Agriculture, Industry and Trade and the Environment to bring forward proposals to address this critical situation.\u00a0The Association considers the existing state activities to be insufficient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">This year, the calamity will \"massively\" develop according to the think-tank in the South Bohemian and \u00dast\u00ed regions around the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, in the South of Central Bohemia, in the North of the Highlands and in the Hradec Kr\u00e1lov\u00e9 Region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">According to the organization, the bark beetle calamity is expected to move to higher altitudes, such as the Giant Mountains, next year, but bark beetles will develop more slowly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">Only the state-owned enterprise Lesy \u010cesk\u00e9 republiky (L\u010cR) increased logging by 30 percent to a record 13.89 million cubic meters in 2019 from the previous 10.65 million cubic meters due to bark beetle calamity.\u00a0Logging alone has increased by 62 percent to 9.71 million cubic meters last year.\u00a0The company owns almost half of the forests in the country and its current main effort is to manage bark beetle calamity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">Bark beetle calamity, which causes overpressure of timber supply on the market and a fall in prices, is reflected in the fact that the company counts on loss-making management by 2023.\u00a0Last year, LCR reported a loss of one billion crowns (EUR 40 million).\u00a0Last year they had a profit of 70 million crowns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">Last year, the state began to pay more money for interventions in the forests, doubling the sum to 1.15 billion crowns, yet has not yet informed about further increases.\u00a0Last year, it also began paying money to non-state forest owners as compensation for the reduced price of wood.\u00a0Together, they have pledged 2.5 billion crowns in this program by the end of this year.\u00a0The Association of Owners of Municipal and Private Forests of the Czech Republic asked the state for seven billion crowns for forestry work this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"detail-odstavec\">According to estimates of the Forest Protection Service, total logging of bark beetle affected wood will reach about 20 million m3 last year and volume of unprocessed bark beetle wood 7.5 million m3.\u00a0These volumes include, for example, the extraction of dried-up stands of pine or wind-driven calamities.\u00a0In the period 1990-2015, the average
