At the moment\u00a0the industry works well,\u00a0however, this winter some dark clouds have started to show up for Finland's forest industry<\/p>\n<p>Demand prospects for the forest industry are uncertain.\u00a0Export volumes of pulp have increased following the recovery of Chinese exports.\u00a0However, the export price has fallen - from January to October last year it was almost 30% lower.\u00a0Export prices for the sawmill industry also fell sharply last year due to the oversupply caused by the bark beetle and storms in Europe.\u00a0Stocks are full in storage, which, together with the competitive situation, is slowing down the recovery in prices.\u00a0The decline in pulp prices was reflected in paper and board prices last year.\u00a0The decline in paper exports is likely to continue as before.\u00a0The outlook for paperboard exports is more positive than paper, but the market situation is not easy given the continuing economic uncertainty in export countries.<\/p>\n<p>The labor situation is uncertain.\u00a0In the autumn, the forest industry suffered from several downtime or longer maintenance breaks as demand weakened.\u00a0Early in the year, the forest industry was threatened by a strike. The losses caused by strikes would not be exactly the same as calculated, for example, at export prices a year ago.\u00a0The two-week value of exports for paper, board and pulp would be approximately EUR 339 million if estimated on the basis of 2019 export volumes and using the latest available October prices per tonne.\u00a0The loss in value of exports would have been 13% higher at the January 2019 price level.<\/p>\n<p>Even the availability of raw materials is shaken.\u00a0Poor harvesting has been hampering logging since the end of last year until today.\u00a0Most of Finland does not have access to winter harvesting sites, or at least no wood can be moved from them.\u00a0Long-term weather forecasts suggest that winter seems to be short in harvesting.\u00a0The situation sounds quite familiar.\u00a0A couple of years ago, in January 2018, magazines read similar titles.\u00a0At the time, however, the demand for finished products was quite different, with prices rising and reaching record levels in the timber trade and logging.<\/p>\n<p>In a slow economic cycle, the need for labor and raw materials will be reduced, or the effects of a possible strike will be lessened due to the raw material and market conditions.
