The fourth quarter was disappointing many European sawmills, but a more balanced market can be expected. The market for sawn and planed timber products has been challenging during the fourth quarter and sales prices have continued to decline.<\/em><\/p>\n

The onslaught of spruce bark in Central Europe and southern Sweden, with subsequent oversupply of damaged timber at low prices, has continued to adversely affect the timber market.<\/span><\/p>\n

The situation with the spruce bark drill is still not resolved in Central Europe and the harvesting of damaged forest continues. The situation in southern Sweden has improved and the volume of damaged forest is limited in the market. The Baltics have not been affected by the problems with the spruce bark drill. Consumption of wood products is stable.<\/p>\n

The US market continues to improve and a better market situation can be expected in the UK following the Brexit decision. The market balance has improved in December.<\/p>\n

The volume of production in Europe has decreased slightly while the decline in Canada has been significant. Production in Finland fell by 28 per cent in December compared to the same period last year as a result of the labor market conflict which is still ongoing.<\/p>\n

Stocks do not continue to increase and appear to be stabilizing, which is a good sign at this time of year.<\/p>\n

Prices for sawn timber have continued to fall in 2019 and during the fourth quarter reached unprofitable levels for most sawmills. Due to the improved market balance, certain price increases have been implemented for deliveries in early 2020.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
