As of September 2019, the estimates from 15 German states on this year\u2019s incidence of damaged wood and the still anticipated volumes of wood amount to 68.586m m\u00b3 across the whole range of tree species.<\/em><\/p>\n

The area requiring reforestation as a result of the damage has increased from roughly 140,000 ha to what is now around 180,000 ha nationwide.<\/p>\n

Coupled with the volume of over 31m m\u00b3 of damaged wood cleared last year, the combined volume for 2018\/2019 already amounts to approximately 100m m\u00b3. For comparison, the volume of all species of wood felled in all types of forest ownerships in Germany totalled 64.362m m\u00b3 last year.<\/p>\n

According to the reply from the German government to a parliamentary question by the B\u00fcndnis 90\/Die Gr\u00fcne Group, however, the numbers for 2019 are not differentiated by wood species or causes of damage but must be seen as estimated values.<\/p>\n

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture says the figures reported from the individual federal states also relate to volumes of damaged wood that will probably not come onto the market until 2020 and even not all, however, in the case of dry softwoods left standing for extended periods and certain species of hardwood in some places.<\/p>\n

As such, the data are only of limited suitability for an approximate forecast of the 2019 volume of damaged wood that has also been cleared and was thus destined to be used as a material or a source of energy. Moreover, the figures are based on estimates from August\/September, which, as has already become evident for North-Rhine Westphalia, are likely to have to be adjusted.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
