Record snowfall, extreme drought and the hottest June in the history: weather extremes once again shaped the forest year 2019 in Austria. \"Climate change does not give us a breath. One year of weather extremes follows on to the next, \"states Rudolf Freidhager, board member of the Austrian Federal Forests (\u00d6Bf). \"After exceptionally large amounts of snow at the beginning of the year, accompanied by a strong snow break, followed by above-average dry months and finally the warmest June since the beginning of the measurement. The low-precipitation summer months favor the bark beetle, which has again led to high beetle rates, especially in the locations north of the Danube. \"<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Accordingly, the provisional forest balance for 2019 is out: around 80% of the total annual amount of around 1.4 million m3 is damaged wood, which represents an increase of 21% compared to the previous year (2018: 66%). Much of it comes from storm damage and snow falls. The effects will also be reflected in the coming annual result. \"Due to additional costs for beetle prevention and timber harvesting as well as reduced timber revenues, we are expecting climate change costs of more than 40 million euros this year, which corresponds to about one fifth of the operating performance,\" says Georg Sch\u00f6ppl, Board Member for Real Estate and Finance, describing the extent of the impact. \"Compared with the previous year, the costs of climate change almost doubled (2018: 23.6 million), almost tripling in three years (2017: 15.7 million).<\/p>\n

After exceptionally heavy snowfalls in January, which had come as a result of a northern storage situation in the Randalpen, there were heavy snow damages. The areas Traun and Innviertel (Upper Austria) around the Attersee and Mondsee as well as the districts in the area Flachgau-Tennengau were particularly affected. While young plants were protected by the exceptionally high snowpack, especially two to three meter high young trees were damaged, which could not withstand the snow masses. Much of the damage was repaired in 2019.<\/p>\n

Due to the very mild, partly warm months of February, March and April, the unusually high snowpack melted away quickly, only the wet-cool May brought enough moisture in time at the beginning of the growing season. The heat of the following months favored the beetle emergence. \"On average, there were two, in deep layers to three swarming flights of bark beetle, which is now also found in mountainous areas up to 1,800 meters above sea level,\" said the \u00d6Bf board. As a result, masses of bark beetles were once again recorded in the extra-Alpine areas such as Kobernausser Wald, M\u00fchlviertel and Waldviertel. There was a lack of better supply and more even distribution of rainfall, especially during the summer. \"Since June was exceptionally hot and dry, supplies were already used up in July this year.<\/p>\n

The damage events and calamities leave a clear mark on the Austrian timber markets and on the balance sheet. \"Due to the above-average volumes that are currently on the Central European market, freight costs have more than doubled year-on-year, and timber harvesting costs have almost tripled. By contrast, wood prices have fallen by up to 20%, \"reports Georg Sch\u00f6ppl. \"In addition, there are additional expenses for forest care and beetle prevention. At just under EUR 41 million, we will see climate change costs higher than ever this year. \"Nonetheless, investments in forest management must be continued in order to make the stocks climate-resilient and to promote forest conversion. \"In 2019, the Federal Forestry Agency invested 12.2 million euros in forestry care, of which approx. EUR 5.7 million in beetle prevention. In addition, another 3.0 million Euro for protection forests, \"explains Georg Sch\u00f6ppl. \"Investments amounting to around EUR 12.0 million for forest management, beetle prevention and protective forests are planned for 2020 as well.\"<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
