Deere & Co. is laying off 57 workers at its Davenport manufacturing plant, saying reduced building activity is expected to lower sales of the construction and forestry equipment made there by as much as 15% next fiscal year.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Moline, Illinois-based company said it notified employees at its Davenport Works of the cuts about a week ago. The cuts become effective Jan. 6.<\/p>\n

It's the second round of layoffs the company has announced this fall. In late September, Deere said it was laying off 113 employees at the Davenport plant, effective Nov. 18.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the company said it would place about 50 employees at John Deere Harvester Works in East Moline, Illinois, on indefinite layoff, beginning Oct. 28. The plant makes large farm equipment.<\/p>\n

Deere employed about 74,000 workers companywide in 2018, the last year for which figures are publicly available.<\/p>\n

Deere said in its fourth-quarter earnings report last month that it expected construction and forestry equipment sales to fall between 10% and 15% next fiscal year, and it projected farm equipment sales to drop 5% to 10%.<\/p>\n

Ken Golden, a Deere spokesman, said in an email that the company announced no other layoffs this month.<\/p>\n

The cuts were made \"in response to current market conditions,\" Golden said. \"Each Deere factory must balance the size of its production workforce with customer demand for products from their individual factory.\"<\/p>\n

Deere's fourth-quarter earnings declined 8% to $722 million compared to a year earlier, reflecting lingering trade tensions and this year's difficult growing and harvesting conditions, the company said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
