Which countries are most affected by the current timber trade war (2016-2018) and how the new trade policies have shaped the global timber trade flows?<\/em><\/p>\n

NAHB said that the new tariff policy announced by the Trump administration has raised the price of basic construction timber and restricted the import of timber raw materials from Mexico to the United States.The magazine Market Watch reported that it would inhibit the liquidity of the construction timber and timber markets.<\/p>\n

Last year, Canada\u2019s import tariff on softwood was about 21%. According to Market Watch, high tariffs force North American timber to completely restructure the global supply chain, while encouraging US buyers to import timber from other parts of the world instead of transporting timber through the Canadian border.<\/p>\n

However, many products are difficult to import into the United States at the beginning. For example, the share of Norway has actually increased from close to 0% in 2016 to 0.03% in 2018.<\/p>\n

Growth in both China and Russia exceeded the general ratio. Considering China's growing demand for wood, 66% growth is normal.<\/p>\n

At present, China-US trade has made some progress. Unfortunately, even if trade with China is quickly and comprehensively restored to zero tariffs, US hardwood exports will not return to the level before the dispute.<\/p>\n

The International Monetary Fund pointed out that China\u2019s economic growth has slowed as China\u2019s regulatory authorities struggle to control debt and trade tensions have affected the macro economy. This means that China will still face economic weakness after the trade tensions ease. Again, this also means that export growth will also face weakness.<\/p>\n

From January to August 2018, China accounted for 53% of all US hardwood sawn timber exports. By the end of August this year, the proportion has fallen to 41%, but China is still the world's largest market for red birch, ash, cherry, red oak, white oak and walnut, even down 25% from the same period last year. 49%.<\/p>\n

If China's recovery is relatively slow, the global demand for sawn timber for these species will also slow. In addition, although the recovery may be slow, it may not begin until the tariffs are lowered. So far, it has not been proposed as part of the first phase of the agreement.<\/p>\n

We may see some additional demand growth in other markets around the world, offsetting some of China's continued weakness. However, this growth will be offset by a slowdown in economic growth in most of the world's economies. In the latest report of the organization, the International Monetary Fund lowered its growth expectations for the 2019 and 2020 in the euro zone, the UK, emerging Asian countries, Mexico, the Middle East and \u201cother advanced economies\u201d.<\/p>\n
