This halted a proposed October tariff hike. Both sides are working toward a deal for November\u2019s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Chile. But any possible trade deal with China now being negotiated might not be broad enough to save US hardwood timber companies from layoffs, cutbacks and closings, say analysts.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese tariffs imposed on exports of red oak, walnut and other hardwoods have cut almost 50% of the revenue in the industry since 2017, according to the American Hardwood Export Council.<\/p>\n<p>Lumber companies have responded by closing sawmills and eliminating shifts. Since the trade war with China commenced, the value of exports of US hardwood lumber dropped by almost 57% to US$54 million in August, from US$124.8 million in August 2017, according to AHEC.<\/p>\n<p>Many U.S. hardwood lumber firms have seen reduced demand, and have had to make cutbacks and eliminate jobs. Gutchess Lumber, Baillie Lumber, and Northland Corp. all\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/its-a-crisis-lumber-mills-slash-jobs-as-trade-war-cuts-deep-11569490206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">s<\/a>aid\u00a0that demand has decreased from the same time last year. Baillie and Northland have been forced to lay off workers. Gutchess reduced overtime and suspended 401(k) contributions.<\/p>\n<p>Across our industry, the trade dispute has drastically decreased demand for U.S. produced hardwood,\u201d Northwest Hardwoods said in a statement. \u201cAs China looks to other countries with less regulated and sustainable hardwood supplies to meet market demand, supply chains may be permanently disrupted.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"section-title\"><\/h2>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tacoma, Washington-based Northwest Hardwoods will close its Mount Vernon, Washington and Maury River, Virginia mills in November, laying off 100 employees.
