European beetle spruce logs have flooded the Chinese market. In the first eight months of the year, the EU countries exported more than 8 million m3 of spruce logs to China, a 402% rise as compared to the same period of last year.<\/p>\n

The top exporting countries are the countries where the bark beetle outbreak hit the most: Belgium leads the way with 2.8 million m3 worth of spruce logs exports, followed by Poland (1.4 million m3), Germany (1.3 million m3), Czechia (1 million m3) and France (637 thousand m3).<\/p>\n

As previously reported by GWMI,\u00a0European logs are now sold in China at lower prices than radiata logs from New Zealand. Last month these European logs were selling for around 100 EUR per m3\u00a0plus or minus 5 EUR depending upon quality. At the same time radiata logs were selling for 115-120 USD per m3. Allowing for exchange rates this means the European logs were a minimum 5 USD per m3\u00a0cheaper.<\/p>\n

Some recent estimates, forecast 60-70 million m3 of bark beetle infested wood in Europe for 2019, thus this export trend will probably continue at much higher rate.<\/p>\n
