This year and next year, export prices for Finnish lumber will fall, driven by China.\u00a0The price difference between spruce and pine lumber is widening, as the export price of pine will fall by 3-4% this year, but spruce sawn timber by 2-3%.\u00a0The operating result of the wood products industry is weakening from the previous year, but is supported by the good price level of by-products.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Lumber production in Finland grew slightly last year.\u00a0Domestic consumption grew, but as the exports declined, sawnwood stocks in Finnish sawmills increased sharply.\u00a0This year will see a slight decrease in the production of sawnwood, as exports will continue to decline, albeit at a much slower pace than in the previous year.\u00a0Approximately 74% of the lumber production in Finland is expected to be exported this year.<\/p>\n

Last year, Finnish lumber exports fell by just over seven per cent from the previous year.\u00a0Exports of pine lumber decreased somewhat, but exports of spruce lumber fell by over 14 per cent.\u00a0<\/span>Exports of sawnwood were under pressure from China's decline in imports, driven by high inventory of lumber, tightening environmental regulations in the country, and a slowdown in economic growth.\u00a0Exports of both Finnish spruce and pine sawn timber to China fell by nearly 40 per cent last year.<\/p>\n

Overall, the export volume of Finnish sawmill pine lumber fell less than those of spruce, as the North African market, important for pine lumber, developed favorably.\u00a0In the current year, Finnish lumber exports are expected to fall slightly, but will rise slightly next year.<\/p>\n

The average export price of sawn timber increased last year by almost nine percent from the previous year.\u00a0Export prices peaked in September, but dropped significantly in the last quarter due to the challenges of the Chinese market and the weaker demand in North Africa.\u00a0In addition, the increase in lumber in Central Europe, damaged in the storms of last autumn, increased the supply of lower quality lumber, which was particularly reflected in lower quality lumber prices.\u00a0This year's supply will be somewhat lower than the average demand for lumber.\u00a0The spread of the price difference between spruce and pine sawnwood, which began last autumn, will continue this year as well.\u00a0The export price of spruce sawnwood will fall by 2-3 per cent this year and pine sawnwood by 3-4 per cent.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
