What volumes of wood will be harvested in France in 2019? Difficult to answer this question. Due to the rapid evolution of the bark beetle infestation to both spruce and fir, no accredited body in France could provide accurate figures. The only data currently available are estimates from forest owners or collected from professionals at early fall softwood auctions.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Last June, the interprofessional organisation Fibois Grand-Est evoked volumes of up to 3 to 4 million m3 for the year 2019, on all infested regions.\u00a0But summer passed by and new bark beetle infestation occurred in July.\u00a0\"Due to the dry weather which started in June, loggers cut two to three times more wood in September,\"\u00a0<\/em>noted many sawyers and loggers at the auction organised by the National Forests Office (ONF) in Levier, eastern France, on September 24, 2019.<\/p>\n

Under these conditions, it is therefore very likely that the June quotas will be largely exceeded when the balance will be done at the end of the year.\u00a0\"We will probably be close to 5 million m3 when all the woods are harvested,\"<\/em>\u00a0says Christian Bulle, president of Fransylva Franche-Comt\u00e9.<\/p>\n

The regions quickly understood the extent of the damage and mobilized quickly. In the east, under the auspices of Grand Fibois East, an initial sum of \u20ac 5 million\u00a0has been allocated in\u00a0advance for the help of 1st\u00a0processing (maximum amount of 500 000 \u20ac per beneficiary repayable over 4 years, up to 50% of the amount of timber purchased in 2018-2010).\u00a0The goal is to quickly evacuate infested logs from forest stands and store them.<\/p>\n

The same objective is targeted by the \u20ac 2.5 million repayable advances, available until the end of June 2021, voted by the Bourgogne Franche-Comt\u00e9 region.\u00a0In the form of a charter drawn up by the Fibois interprofessionals of the 2 regions concerned, an interregional plan associates all the stakeholders (owners, managers, loggers, nurseries, ...), and coordinates the ongoing or future actions (monitoring of the evolution of the epidemic, harvesting operations of the woods, promotion of bleached woods by insect attacks, renewal of damaged forests ...).<\/p>\n

On the State side, the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced on October 8, 2019, the release of a \u20ac 16 million financing support measures (exploitation, marketing, replenishment), in favor of owners of forests affected by the calamity.<\/p>\n

These efforts must however be appreciated in the light of the considerable damage suffered by the forest owners (\u20ac\u00a080 million estimated in current losses of, future, operating costs, recovery ...).<\/p>\n

In the east of France, lumber yards are all blue and the processors waste a lot of time and raw material trying to value sawn timber logs.\u00a0As for the pallet and formwork markets, they are now well engorged.<\/p>\n

In the western areas that have already absorbed a lot of logs the prices are suffering.\u00a0For the forest owners, the only reason for relative satisfaction comes from the sale of the green wood (spruce-fir) whose falling prices are now contained (see table below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
