In the future, the volume of timber imports will continue to be at a relatively high level, but the growth will not be as rapid as in previous years. The question is if China will be able to support its huge and still booming demand for timber on its own domestic resources or will still rely on imports?

China's timber production is mainly composed of three parts: one is the national planned output, the other is the unplanned over-exploitation part, and the third is the loggers that use the wood for own purposes.

Due to the rapid development of the domestic economy, especially the development of construction, decoration, furniture manufacturing, and paper industry, which are directly related to the demand for wood, the proportion of wood consumption has increased year by year, which has spurred the rise of China’s timber imports, which has also made China the world's largest importer of forest products. Due to the serious shortage of domestic timber resources, wood consumption is increasing. In order to meet market demand, it is necessary to import large quantities of wood for a long time.

In the future, Chinese timber imports will have the following characteristics:

First, construction materials, plywood materials, and wood flooring are still in the focus of market demand.

The state has strengthened control over fixed asset investment, improved rural living conditions and made solid investments in the western region which are an important part of the country's economic development. After several years of market reshuffle, the plywood industry has entered a period of benign development. In recent years, the production and sales of wood flooring market at home and abroad have been booming, which has further stimulated the development of the wood flooring industry and thus stimulated the demand for wood floor blanks.

Second, the variety of imported timber products has become more and more abundant. With the continuous improvement of people's living standards, the market demand for decorative decoration materials has become more diversified and high-grade, and the imported varieties of wood will become increasingly abundant.

Third, the ban on logging and export restrictions in timber exporting countries have affected the import of logs from China.

Forest product export certification and anti-dumping measures will affect the imports of timber. The demand for certified products in the “environmentally sensitive market” in Europe and the United States will increase, and anti-dumping investigations on the export of furniture and plywood in China will affect the export of wood products to a certain extent. China's timber imports create pressure and restrict the demand for certain tree species.

Conclusion

Timber imports have made a contribution to protecting China's forest resources. However, in the long run, China's timber supply and demand gap is so large, and foreign exchange consumption is so high that long-term dependence on imports is not a good strategy for the country.

With the internationalization of environmental issues, countries are constantly strengthening the protection of forest resources. However, China's huge hunger for timber is difficult for the international market to bear for a long time. With the improvement of science and technology, all countries are paying attention to increasing the protection of timber. Thus, the solution to the shortage of wood supply and demand in China should be based on own domestic resources.

With the rising protection of forest resources by countries in the world, the trade friction between the world’s countries, and the development of China’s forest products market, the dynamics of Chinese timber imports has changed.
